Yayın Experiences from IYS 2020, public engagement and awareness activities in Turkey(European Acoustics Association, 2023) Şaher, Konca; Sezgin, Hakika; Dümen, Ayça Şentop; Nas, Sezin; Kulak, Seda; Özçetin, ZuhalThe year 2020, which has been designated as the International Year of Sound with the intention of celebrating and promoting the importance of sound for science and society was ironically started as a silent and isolated year with the global COVID-19 pandemic. However, these unprecedented times and activities around the world, which explored the interaction between sound, technology and the society, presented sound experiences for humanity and the ecosystem that they have never had the opportunity to experience before. This study reports on the activities of Turkish Acoustical Society during these times and aims to draw attention to the benefits, challenges, and opportunities of the instruments for widening participation and spreading knowledge relating to sound. The main activities were public opinion survey on noise annoyance in dwellings before and during the pandemic, Turkish Glossary of Acoustic Terms, IYS Drawing and Composition Competition in Turkish schools and various seminars, interviews, podcast on social media channels. Our experience and findings suggest that designing and implementing activities that actively includes researchers, teachers, students and ordinary people may help increase public engagement behaviorally, emotionally, and cognitively, there by positively affecting awareness in sound related subjects.Yayın Effects of educational policies on design of inclusive schools: SERÇEV case(Springer Nature, 2021-07-20) Gülbahar, Simge; Cordan, ÖzgeUniversal design and inclusive education aroused as paradigms based on egalitarianism in the twentieth century. The countries are responsible to update the approaches on their own education policy including inclusive education. Updates on education policy become a problem to articulate spatial requirements of inclusive schools according to them. In this sense, universal design gives an opportunity to find effective and practical spatial solutions for problems of inclusive education environment through creating an interdisciplinary ground in design process. The aim of the study is to find out the effects of the inclusive educational policy of Turkey on the design of inclusive school environments under the umbrella of both universal design and inclusive education. In this scope, the laws, regulations, legislations, regarding the inclusive education in Turkey within the international discourse are reviewed. SERÇEV (Children with Cerebral Palsy Association) inclusive schools, which are Gökkuşağı Primary School and SERÇEV Accessible Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, are examined in the scope of universal design. These inclusive schools are chosen as the case studies to examine the spatial reflection of the current policies in inclusive school environment. The methodology of the study includes commentary of on-site observations on spatial requirements regarding universal design approach and interviews from site visits. The study contributes to determine the design approaches of inclusive school environment in the case of SERÇEV inclusive schools in Turkey.Yayın Referential interpretation of vernacular heritage in recent architectural design(Scuola Pitagore Editrice, 2015-06-11) Aslan, Emrah; Ertürk, Doğan Zafer; Ertürk, SevinçThis research is designed to look for the influences of vernacular heritage in contemporary architecture, using different design actions; imitation, bricolage, analogies, interpretation and mimesis. In order to search for the possible effect of vernacular heritage on contemporary architectural practice, seventeen cases have been analyzed with interviewing architects. The data collection method has been chosen carefully and applied in several different ways: literature review, digital documents, observations, sketches and scaled drawings; semi-structured interviews with the designer in order to catch their intentions in case studies. The result of the research showed that the Anatolian vernacular archetypes are being used by the architects in their practices via different level of referential interpretations, design actions. The research goes beyond simple subjective observations of using archetypes; this has been achieved through the development of framework for the systematic classification and analysis of a range of reference types and used both in the interpretation of visual material and in the analysis of documentary sources and interviews with architects. There are areas where thinking and design skills of the students are improved yet it is different from other courses. Increased number of students for each academic member in the project courses conducted through a mentor system has resulted in failure to sustain project-oriented education actively and reduced the productivity quality of education. In the architectural curriculum organisation 'design studio' is the unique and preeminent subject. Freshman students encounter 'design' first in basic design course, before they know what designing incorporates. The Basic Design is the starting point of initiating creativity in architecture education. It helps each student to understand architecture as a creative and innovative practice in the first year of education. This study analyzes the characteristics of basic design course, the topics of the course contents and its significance in the architectural curriculum in Turkey as well.
