    Age of Information in Practice
(Cambridge University Press, 2023) Uysal, Elif; Kaya, Onur; Baghaee, Sajjad; Beytur, Hasan Burhan
While age of Information (AoI) has gained importance as a metric characterizing the freshness of information in information-update systems and time-critical applications, most previous studies on AoI have been theoretical. In this chapter, we compile a set of recent works reporting AoI measurements in real-life networks and experimental testbeds, and investigating practical issues such as synchronization, the role of various transport layer protocols, congestion control mechanisms, application of machine learning for adaptation to network conditions, and device related bottlenecks such as limited processing power.

The porosity of borders: between formal and informal urban patterns
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2021) Cebir Meral, Gözde İrem; Özsoy, Ahsen
Urban spaces developed with formal and informal settlements that have varied permeability features are the places where any social, cultural and ethnic communities cohabit in a heterogeneous arrangement. Both formal/regular and informal/spontaneous modes of spatial production lead to changes in socio-economic and spatial relationships within the city. Planned and unplanned housing patterns intersect and are juxtaposed in time. The seam lines between the various parts of the patchwork-like settlements show different qualities in terms of transition characteristics, creating different patterns for the use of public and private space and spatial discontinuity. Therefore, fragmentation and disconnection are encountered between different social groups at the intersection of formal and informal residential settlements. The differences make the borders meaningful, however, to eliminate discontinuities in terms of creating quality urban environments; the boundaries should be more blurred, ambiguous and even seamless. Porosity/permeability characteristics of the borders as indicators of ambiguity strengthen the potentials of in-between space to increase communication and interaction providing urban fluidity. In the scope of the research, to analyze the connection/intersection of various formal/informal housing patterns in Istanbul in terms of their spatial and social dimensions, a comparative and mutual assessment is conducted. Creative approaches and bottom-up models of different countries related to the porosity characteristics of in-between zones are concluded along with the findings of the field study related to the theoretical framework.

Laplacian eigenvectors of graphs: Perron-Frobenius and Faber-Krahn type theorems
(Springer Verlag, 2007) Bıyıkoğlu, Türker; Leydold, Josef; Stadler, Peter F.
Eigenvectors of graph Laplacians have not, to date, been the subject of expository articles and thus they may seem a surprising topic for a book. The authors propose two motivations for this new LNM volume: (1) There are fascinating subtle differences between the properties of solutions of Schrödinger equations on manifolds on the one hand, and their discrete analogs on graphs. (2) “Geometric” properties of (cost) functions defined on the vertex sets of graphs are of practical interest for heuristic optimization algorithms. The observation that the cost functions of quite a few of the well-studied combinatorial optimization problems are eigenvectors of associated graph Laplacians has prompted the investigation of such eigenvectors. The volume investigates the structure of eigenvectors and looks at the number of their sign graphs (“nodal domains”), Perron components, graphs with extremal properties with respect to eigenvectors. The Rayleigh quotient and rearrangement of graphs form the main methodology.

Impacts of climate change on precipitation climatology and variability in Turkey
(Springer International Publishing Ag, 2020) Türkeş, Murat; Turp, M. Tufan; An, Nazan; Öztürk, Tuğba; Kurnaz, Mehmet Levent
In this chapter, changes in seasonal precipitation climatology, extreme weather conditions, and aridity conditions of Turkey are evaluated for the period of 2021-2050 with respect to the reference period of 1971-2000 by using regional climate model simulations. Projections of future climate conditions are modeled by forcing Regional Climate Model, RegCM4.4 of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) with MPI-ESM-MR global climate model of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. The outputs of MPI-ESM-MR are used to generate 10 km resolution data by the double nesting method under both RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emission scenarios. The seasonal time-scale performance of RegCM4.4 in reproducing the observed climatology over Turkey is tested by using the output of the global climate model. The projection results show a strong decrease in precipitation for almost all parts of the domain according to the output of the regional model. The intensity of drought conditions is projected to increase. According to the projection results, more arid conditions are expected in the region for the near future. Therefore, drier than present climate conditions are projected to occur more intensely over Turkey.

Sales promotional strategies and buying behavior in an emerging market at the post recession period
(IGI Global, 2016) Nasır, Suphan; Bal, Esra
The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of sales promotional tools on consumer buying behavior in an emerging market at the post-recession period. This study assesses consumers' proneness to sales promotions and examines the effectiveness of four promotional tools that are premium offers, coupons, buy and get promotions, and price discounts on buying behavior in terms of brand switching, stockpiling, purchase acceleration, and product trial. The findings reveal that consumers are more prone to price discount and buy and get promotions, respectively. Among the four promotional tools, price discount is the most effective to influence product acceleration, brand switching, stockpiling, and product trial behavior respectively. However, there is no statistically significance difference between the effectiveness of premium offer and buy and get deals with regard to brand switching behavior, product acceleration, and product trail responses. In contrast, coupons are the least ineffective promotional tool in terms of generating all types of consumer response.

Infrastructure assisted data dissemination for vehicular sensor networks in metropolitan areas
(IGI Global, 2012) Tüysüz Erman, Ayşegül; Schwartz, Ramon S.; Dilo, Arta; Schölten, Hans J.; Havinga, Paul
Vehicular Sensor Networks (VSNs) are an emerging area of research that combines technologies developed in the domains of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and Wireless Sensor Networks. Data dissemination is an important aspect of these networks. It enables vehicles to share relevant sensor data about accidents, traffic load, or pollution. Several protocols are proposed for Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication, but they are prone to intermittent connectivity. In this chapter, the authors propose a roadside infrastructure to ensure stable connectivity by adding vehicle to infrastructure to the V2V communication. They introduce a data dissemination protocol, Hexagonal Cell-Based Data Dissemination, adapting it for VSNs within a metropolitan area. The virtual architecture of the proposed data dissemination protocol exploits the typical radial configuration of main roads in a city, and uses them as the basis for the communication infrastructure where data and queries are stored. The design of the communication infrastructure in accordance with the road infrastructure distributes the network data in locations that are close or easily reachable by most of the vehicles. The protocol performs a geographical routing and is suitable for highly dynamic networks, supporting a high number of mobile sources and destinations of data. It ensures reliable data delivery and fast response. The authors evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol in terms of data delivery ratio and data delivery delay. The simulation results show that HexDD significantly improves the data packet delivery ratio in VANETs.

On the Europeanization of minority rights protection
    (Routledge, 2016) Grigoriadis, Ioannis N.
This chapter discusses the rational-choice and sociological institutionalism to shed light on the impact of Europeanization on minority rights in Turkey. It aims to explain the significant bifurcations that emerged in the field of minority rights as far as progress achieved since the slowdown of Turkey's European Union (EU) accession negotiations. The study of minority rights reform helps to suggest two points: the relevance of rational-choice institutionalism appears strong, as major legislative initiatives are normally linked with critical junctures in EU-Turkey relations and the establishment of conducive opportunity structures in Turkish politics; and reform can be also explained in terms of the prevalence of ideational frameworks that may or may not be linked with the European Union and Turkey's EU membership process. The case of minority protection provides an opportunity to think about the applicability of different theoretical tools in Turkey's Europeanization experience.
