    Optimum torque distribution during regenerative braking in a fully electrical vehicle via dynamic programming

    In electric vehicles, it is important to maximize their regenerative braking performances for obtaining longer driving distances. In this study, for an electric vehicle having motors on the front and rear axles, an optimum torque distribution algorithm based on dynamic programming method is proposed for maximizing the regenerative braking energy. Electric motor limits, efficiency maps, battery model and braking force constraints given in the European regulations are considered in the proposed algorithm. The dynamic programming algorithm code and simulation studies for different braking scenarios are carried out via MATLAB. Simulation studies show that via the proposed torque distribution algorithm, significant improvements in the regenerated braking energy are obtained with respect to the fixed-rate torque distribution algorithm.

    Neuropsychiatric outcomes and caregiver distress in primary progressive aphasia

    Background: In this study, we aimed to outline the neuropsychiatric consequences of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and to understand how neuropsychiatric symptomatology affects distress in caregivers. Methods: The Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) including the distress index (NPI-Distress) was used. Additional information about the caregiver burden was obtained using Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI). NPI, NPI-Distress, and ZBI data from 17 patients with a clinical diagnosis of PPA were compared with 10 stroke aphasia patients. Neuropsychiatric symptomatology was investigated based on three clusters; Mood, Frontal/Comportmental, and Psychotic/Disruptive. Additionally, the Activities of Daily Living Questionnaire (ADLQ) was used to outline the functional impairment. Twelve healthy controls were included to compare the neurocognitive test scores with PPA and stroke aphasia groups. Results: A greater number of neuropsychiatric symptoms were observed in the PPA group compared to the stroke aphasia group. The number of symptoms in Mood, and Frontal/Comportmental clusters were greater than the number of symptoms in Psychotic/Disruptive clusters in the PPA group, whereas no significant relationship between the number of symptoms and symptom clusters was found in the stroke aphasia group. In the PPA group, a strong correlation was found between the NPI-Frequency × Severity scores and the NPI-Distress scores. Moreover, the NPI-Distress scores in the PPA group strongly correlated with the ZBI scores. Scores for anxiety, irritability/lability, and apathy had a stronger correlation with the NPI-Distress scores compared to the other NPI symptoms. The Communication subscale was the most impaired domain in the PPA group. Travel, and Employment and Recreation subscales showed greater functional impairment in the stroke aphasia group compared to the PPA group. Conclusions: Neuropsychiatric symptoms in PPA in our study were more frequent than previously reported. Furthermore, the distress index of the NPI was not only correlated with the severity of the neuropsychiatric symptoms but also reflected the overall burden on the caregivers in the PPA group.

    From past to present: spam detection and identifying opinion leaders in social networks

    On microblogging sites, which are gaining more and more users every day, a wide range of ideas are quickly emerging, spreading, and creating interactive environments. In some cases, in Turkey as well as in the rest of the world, it was noticed that events were published on microblogging sites before appearing in visual, audio and printed news sources. Thanks to the rapid flow of information in social networks, it can reach millions of people in seconds. In this context, social media can be seen as one of the most important sources of information affecting public opinion. Since the information in social networks became accessible, research started to be conducted using the information on the social networks. While the studies about spam detection and identification of opinion leaders gained popularity, surveys about these topics began to be published. This study also shows the importance of spam detection and identification of opinion leaders in social networks. It is seen that the data collected from social platforms, especially in recent years, has sourced many state-of-art applications. There are independent surveys that focus on filtering the spam content and detecting influencers on social networks. This survey analyzes both spam detection studies and opinion leader identification and categorizes these studies by their methodologies. As far as we know there is no survey that contains approaches for both spam detection and opinion leader identification in social networks. This survey contains an overview of the past and recent advances in both spam detection and opinion leader identification studies in social networks. Furthermore, readers of this survey have the opportunity of understanding general aspects of different studies about spam detection and opinion leader identification while observing key points and comparisons of these studies.

    Comparative performance evaluation of VLC, LTE and WLAN technologies in indoor environments

    Recent years have seen an exponential rise in the demand for indoor wireless connections that have driven future generation networks to aim for higher data rates with extended coverage and affordable rates. The two most prominent technologies for providing indoor wireless connections, WLAN and LTE, have their limitations and they can not coexist in a single band to form heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Visible light communication (VLC) has seen rapid growth in recent years as it has the capability to seamlessly merge with the existing technologies and provide wireless connections with high data rates. VLC based hybrid indoor network effectively combines the preferences of an end-user with the practicality of implementation. In this work, we investigate specific VLC/WLAN and VLC/LTE hybrid scenarios to perform a detailed analysis on the effect of user mobility on the performance of the system and how the performance of the network (in terms of throughput) can be maximized. The study aims to show how different technologies complement each other in the best and even the worst-case scenarios.

    Visual modeling of Turkish morphology

    In this paper, we describe the steps in a visual modeling of Turkish morphology using diagramming tools. We aimed to make modeling easier and more maintainable while automating much of the code generation. We released the resulting analyzer, MorTur, and the diagram conversion tool, DiaMor as free, open-source utilities. MorTur analyzer is also publicly available on its web page as a web service. MorTur and DiaMor are part of our ongoing efforts in building a set of natural language processing tools for Turkic languages under a consistent framework.

    In this paper, we present and explain TRopBank “Turkish PropBank v2.0”. PropBank is a hand-annotated corpus of propositions which is used to obtain the predicate-argument information of a language. Predicate-argument information of a language can help understand semantic roles of arguments. “Turkish PropBank v2.0”, unlike PropBank v1.0, has a much more extensive list of Turkish verbs, with 17.673 verbs in total.

    How do human resources practices affect the performance of the employees in Syria? International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

    The purpose of this research is to analyses how HRM practices affect worker output in a high-pressure setting like the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Syria. It contributes to literature by expanding the understanding of HRM. It provides useful insights and ideas for improving the efficiency of HRM procedures in businesses. This study highlighted the need for the ICRC to prioritize and invest in strong human resource management practices. Primary data was collected from ICRC employees through survey questionnaire. Findings show that HRM practices have a significant direct impact on the motivation and performance of ICRC employees. Meanwhile, psychological safety mediates the relationship between employee's motivation and employee's performance. On the other hand, employee's motivation partially mediates the relationship between HR Practices and employee's performance at ICRC.

    Path loss and RMS delay spread model for VLC-based patient health monitoring system

    Visible Light Communication (VLC) emerges as a supplementary technology to ubiquitous Radio Frequency (RF) since VLC meets the very high data rate, very high reliability, and ultra-low latency requirements driven by the trends in beyond-5G communication systems. Since VLC offers a solution to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and security problems in hospital environments, it becomes a better alternative for Medical Body Sensor Networks (MBSNs). Nonetheless, user mobility in a 3D environment causes a degradation in channel DC gain that leads to an optical path loss and also affects the time dispersive properties of multipath channels. In our paper, we adopt a ray tracing-based site-specific channel modeling method to characterize VLC-based MBSNs channel parameters. Based on the channel characteristics, we propose statistical models for path loss and Root Mean Square (RMS) delay spread in realistic Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward and Family-Type Patient Room (FTPR) where user upon which three MBSNs nodes placed walks over extensive realistic random trajectories. The simulation results indicate that both path loss and RMS delay spread follow a log-normal distribution.

    A proposal for a computational design and ecology based approach to architectural design studio

    Using computational design methods, this study aims to analyze the effects of an integrated design process model on the ecological awareness of architectural students, and on their ability to incorporate ecological issues in their design work. To this end, two studies have been carried out. The first one involves a survey about how ecology-related and computational design courses complement the architectural design studio at different universities in Turkey. The second one, which is the main study of this paper, presents the results of an ecology-based computational design workshop. According to the results of the first study, computer-based design courses in Turkey usually lack the dimension of “computational thinking”, focusing only on computer-aided design tools. Moreover, we have also found out that ecology courses in Turkish architectural education are mostly elective, and hence, have only very indirect connection to the architectural design studio. In the second study, we have demonstrated how incorporating computational thinking into the design process increase students’ awareness of the ecological dimension and their ability to make this dimension an integral part of their projects. The paper concludes by elaborating on the importance of computational methods in architectural education.
