Yayın Laura Mulvey, afterimages: on cinema, women and changing times(Semire Ruken Öztürk, 2021) Gürkan, İpekMulvey’in düşünce hayatı esasında hep aynı veya benzer problemlerin temelinde ilerleyerek farklı açılardan o düşünceyi geliştirmeye ve anlamaya dayanıyor. Yayın Determinants of quality perception of students in online learning in higher education(Taylor and Francis, 2022-12-30) Türkmen, Hediye Gamze[No abstract available]Yayın How do human resources practices affect the performance of the employees in Syria? Earlier, the March 31, 2019 municipal election had already resulted surprisingly with the AKP’s loss of major provinces and metropolitan municipalities, Istanbul and Ankara in particular, to the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and its party-allies of the Nation Alliance. The CHP’s candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu won even more decisively this time, with more than 54% of Istanbul’s voters. These wins in the municipal and repeat-Istanbul elections provide an opportunity for a new democratic onset in Turkish politics. The CHP-led municipalities of Turkey in general, and the Istanbul municipality by İmamoğlu in particular, have the potential to become the driving force of a new wave of democratization in Turkey. This policy paper aims to lay out clearly some steps to be taken for that direction.Yayın VII: The ethics of science and the invisible man through social and cultural scripts and transactional analysis(Peter Lang AG, 2021-06-03) Edman, Timuçin Buğra; Gözen, Hacer; Kasimi, YusufJust as the first entrance of 'the stranger' into Iping ignited the wick of a series of enigmatic events in The Invisible Man, so indeed does H.G. Wells' extraordinary dream world continue to captivate millions. While the limits of science today can be demarcated only through the human imagination, it was not all that different back in 1897, when this science fiction novel was first published. Wells' novel has in fact revived a subject that had been widely discussed in previous centuries which does perhaps fall under the shadow of alchemy. Much of what we know today that is possible through technology allegedly seemed to be conceivable primarily through alchemy or black magic before the positive leap forward in the sciences. Nevertheless, philosophers such as Sir Thomas More and Sir Francis Bacon may have raised the first serious concerns about science and ethics. The intersection of ethics and science is the core contact point, whereby the purpose and limits of science create a mutual entity. Especially recently, the ethics of science has been a topic of discussion following serious trepidations. The 'abode' of science in human life is undoubtedly undeniable. However, when massacres such as Hiroshima and Nagasaki are commemorated, it becomes necessary to reinvigorate the limits of science. As a matter of fact, "during the past decade, scientists, laypeople, and politicians have become increasingly aware of the importance of ethics in scientific research. Several trends have contributed to these growing concerns" (Resnik, 2005, p. 1). In that sense, this article purports to vigilantly explore the inevitable ramifications of science on man through the science fiction novel The Invisible Man and the ethics of science. This study will also explore how psychology structures moral values or ethics in science, and how psychological derivations constitute humans' actions through the theory of Transactional Analysis by Berne, the theory of Spiral Dynamics by Graves, and the Drama Triangle theory by Karpman, through the lens of the science fiction novel The Invisible Man.Yayın The porosity of borders: between formal and informal urban patterns(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2021) Cebir Meral, Gözde İrem; Özsoy, AhsenUrban spaces developed with formal and informal settlements that have varied permeability features are the places where any social, cultural and ethnic communities cohabit in a heterogeneous arrangement. Both formal/regular and informal/spontaneous modes of spatial production lead to changes in socio-economic and spatial relationships within the city. Planned and unplanned housing patterns intersect and are juxtaposed in time. The seam lines between the various parts of the patchwork-like settlements show different qualities in terms of transition characteristics, creating different patterns for the use of public and private space and spatial discontinuity. Therefore, fragmentation and disconnection are encountered between different social groups at the intersection of formal and informal residential settlements. The differences make the borders meaningful, however, to eliminate discontinuities in terms of creating quality urban environments; the boundaries should be more blurred, ambiguous and even seamless. Porosity/permeability characteristics of the borders as indicators of ambiguity strengthen the potentials of in-between space to increase communication and interaction providing urban fluidity. In the scope of the research, to analyze the connection/intersection of various formal/informal housing patterns in Istanbul in terms of their spatial and social dimensions, a comparative and mutual assessment is conducted. Creative approaches and bottom-up models of different countries related to the porosity characteristics of in-between zones are concluded along with the findings of the field study related to the theoretical framework.Yayın Toplumsal algıyı yönlendirme stratejisi olarak dezenformasyon ve mezenformasyon(Duvar, 2022) Şeylan, Seher; Sarıbaş, Serap[No abstract available]Yayın In search of a past memory: Istanbul and the politics of memory in Orhan Pamuk’s work(Ergon-Verlag, 2022) Kahraman, Hasan Bülent; Rentzsch, Julian; Kučera, PetrOrhan Pamuk was born in 1952, and his novels, especially The Black Book, The Museum of Innocence, and A Strangeness in My Mind depict a panorama of Istanbul of the years following his birth. In giving the reader the social, political, and physical picture of Istanbul of the post-1950 period, these novels provide a new politics of memory and even make the politics of memory the central element of all narratives. Taking memory as the central element in his “Istanbul novels”, Pamuk creates mnemonic scenes and images of the city and, with his new approach to the memory politics, tries to replace the “hot memory” in Turkey, which is the memory open to devastations, destructions, and radical changes, with a “cold memory”, that is, a more stable, static memory compiling all the traces of the past and changing very slowly in time. Thus, Pamuk is a path-breaking explicator of the concept of “memory”, writ large. In his books (particularly those published after his first novel Cevdet Bey and His Sons') Istanbul itself plays a pivotal role. Those peculiarities of the city are, for the writer, embedded in the events of the late 19th and early 20th century and in one significant concept, melancholia. To ground his arguments, Pamuk traces Istanbul through the writings of national and international writers. In this article, I argue that melancholia is used for the first time by Pamuk to analyze Istanbul, a point differentiating him from other writers who have written about the city; melancholia is also the concept helping Pamuk to ground his politics of memory. Pamuk’s writing about Istanbul, I argue, is in itself political and critical. The concept pair hot memory-cold memory, which 1 have developed, helps us to understand Pamuk’s political and critical endeavor in his works.Yayın Machine learning(Institution of Engineering and Technology, 2020-01-01) Yıldız, Olcay Taner[No abstract available]Yayın The psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism: a qualitative study(IGI Global, 2021-06-25) Güvenç, Gülden; Til Öğüt, DamlaThe COVID-19 pandemic has led to an extensive deterioration of many industries including the global tourism industry. There has been a strong need for psychology-informed research on tourism that investigates the impact and implications of the pandemic. This chapter is based on a qualitative study that included 60 individuals, recruited through snowball sampling method, 10 females and 10 males from three age groups. Participants were sent an online survey, querying their feelings and thoughts regarding tourism during and after the pandemic, to investigate the psychosocial impact of the pandemic on the population's tourism-related representations, decisions, and emotions. The data was subjected to thematic analysis that would reflect the social representations of the participants and the effects of the pandemic on these representations. Findings were discussed from social and clinical psychology perspectives, particularly via Maslow's and Fiske's theories and the discursive psychology perspective that aim to unfold decision-making processes and motivation underlying human actions.
