Placing STS in and through Turkey
(Soc Social Studies Science, 2023-03-02) Alkan, Aybike; Kaşdoğan, Duygu; Maral, Erol
Why and how does it matter to undertake an STS praxis in a country where the field lacks adequate institutional recognition and capacity? This article investigates this question by tracing multiple, fragmented and contingent stories of placing STS in and through Turkey. At first sight, discontinuous stories of STS programs established in universities and unrecognized nature of STS as a discipline by the Council of Higher Education draw attention to the "underdeveloped" nature of the field in this country. This article counters such a perspective by rendering visible the works that support STS ethos as well as loose institutions within which STS is expected to flourish. By following people and artifacts in institutional and more-than institutional places of STS, this article acknowledges the efforts both to translate STS into the particular places of Turkey and to use STS as an intellectual space through which technoscientific knowledge can be questioned and translated into the local contexts of the country. The analysis of these translation efforts reveals that STS can be thought of as a space that enables one to be attuned to the sensibilities and realities of the country and search for ways to democratize the processes of technoscientific knowledge production whether it be in the universities or in public spaces.

The effect of the interaction between autistic traits and psychotic proneness on empathy: a cross-sectional study with a non-clinical sample
    (Emerald Publishing, 2023-11-08) Yıldırım, Elif
Purpose: Recent evidence indicates an improving effect of the co-occurrence of autistic traits and psychotic symptoms on social cognition, but there is no agreement on the effect of the interaction between autistic traits and psychotic proneness on empathy. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the interaction between autistic traits and positive psychotic experiences on cognitive and affective empathy. Design/methodology/approach: The sample consisted of 420 adults aged between 18 and 60. Assessments were administered anonymously online. Empathic abilities were evaluated by the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). While Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) was applied to measure autistic traits, The Community Assessment of Psychic Experience (CAPE) was used as a measurement of positive psychotic experiences. Findings: A series of regression analyses showed that although AQ and CAPE scores were not correlated with cognitive-IRI, the interaction between these scores predicted cognitive-IRI scores. It was found that the personal distress subscale of IRI was significantly associated with AQ, but this relationship was moderated by CAPE scores. Originality/value: These findings provide a different perspective on understanding social cognitive impairments in autism, which may have potential clinical implications. Findings also contribute to explaining the individual differences in empathic abilities.

From past to present: spam detection and identifying opinion leaders in social networks
(Yildiz Teknik Univ., 2022-06-22) Altınel Girgin, Ayşe Berna; Gümüşçekiçci, Gizem
On microblogging sites, which are gaining more and more users every day, a wide range of ideas are quickly emerging, spreading, and creating interactive environments. In some cases, in Turkey as well as in the rest of the world, it was noticed that events were published on microblogging sites before appearing in visual, audio and printed news sources. Thanks to the rapid flow of information in social networks, it can reach millions of people in seconds. In this context, social media can be seen as one of the most important sources of information affecting public opinion. Since the information in social networks became accessible, research started to be conducted using the information on the social networks. While the studies about spam detection and identification of opinion leaders gained popularity, surveys about these topics began to be published. This study also shows the importance of spam detection and identification of opinion leaders in social networks. It is seen that the data collected from social platforms, especially in recent years, has sourced many state-of-art applications. There are independent surveys that focus on filtering the spam content and detecting influencers on social networks. This survey analyzes both spam detection studies and opinion leader identification and categorizes these studies by their methodologies. As far as we know there is no survey that contains approaches for both spam detection and opinion leader identification in social networks. This survey contains an overview of the past and recent advances in both spam detection and opinion leader identification studies in social networks. Furthermore, readers of this survey have the opportunity of understanding general aspects of different studies about spam detection and opinion leader identification while observing key points and comparisons of these studies.

Comparative performance evaluation of VLC, LTE and WLAN technologies in indoor environments
(IEEE, 2021-05-24) Zeshan, Arooba; Karbalayghareh, Mehdi; Miramirkhani, Farshad; Uysal, Murat; Baykaş, Tunçer
Recent years have seen an exponential rise in the demand for indoor wireless connections that have driven future generation networks to aim for higher data rates with extended coverage and affordable rates. The two most prominent technologies for providing indoor wireless connections, WLAN and LTE, have their limitations and they can not coexist in a single band to form heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Visible light communication (VLC) has seen rapid growth in recent years as it has the capability to seamlessly merge with the existing technologies and provide wireless connections with high data rates. VLC based hybrid indoor network effectively combines the preferences of an end-user with the practicality of implementation. In this work, we investigate specific VLC/WLAN and VLC/LTE hybrid scenarios to perform a detailed analysis on the effect of user mobility on the performance of the system and how the performance of the network (in terms of throughput) can be maximized. The study aims to show how different technologies complement each other in the best and even the worst-case scenarios.

    Visual modeling of Turkish morphology
(European Language Resources Association (ELRA), 2020-05-16) Özenç, Berke; Solak, Ercan
In this paper, we describe the steps in a visual modeling of Turkish morphology using diagramming tools. We aimed to make modeling easier and more maintainable while automating much of the code generation. We released the resulting analyzer, MorTur, and the diagram conversion tool, DiaMor as free, open-source utilities. MorTur analyzer is also publicly available on its web page as a web service. MorTur and DiaMor are part of our ongoing efforts in building a set of natural language processing tools for Turkic languages under a consistent framework.

God, man, and nature: life for reason and the reason behind the universe - a panentheistic approach to life of pi
(De Gruyter, 2021-11-08) Edman, Timuçin Buğra; Gözen, Hacer
This article intends to lay out a comparative study of Karma philosophy and literature scrutinizing Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi through a panentheistic approach. Because Karma is one of the predominant philosophies in the novel and permeates the general atmosphere, this article intends to scrutinize Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi through a panentheistic approach. Although karma is a very complex issue, since anyone committing evil acts can claim to be a mere agent of karma delivering punishment to others for sins they committed in their past lives, it is true that according to karma, our actions have consequences which affect the entirety of our lives, and this can also be seen as free will. Yet while this approach tends to focus on the action and reaction mechanisms of life, the flow of life in the universe should still be carefully contemplated, since if we believe the first story, Pi's survival not only depends on his choices, but also on the opportunities that the universe offers him. In that sense, if we are to accept God as the soul of the universe, then the universal spirit must be omnipresent and omnipotent while also capable of transforming into anything in terms of s panentheistic approach. Thus God, being greater than the universe, is the ultimate force that balances everything, and is also the biggest karma controller. For this reason, this article analyzes Life of Pi from both inductive and deductive slants to demonstrate that all roads lead to God, the omniscient.

The urban and architectural characteristics of Voyvoda street from past to present
(Konya Technical Univ, 2021-06) Seçmen, Serengül; Süyük Makaklı, Elif
Purpose: Voyvoda Street in Galata district of Istanbul originated centuries ago at the inner walls of the medieval city and was one of the most significant of its era, which has preserved its unique character and urban identity. In the nineteenth century, it became an important financial axis for the city. This study aims to understand the factors which determined the axial character of Voyvoda Street and its urban identity. The street, which is under the influence of new dynamics is examined in relation to spatial and functional transformation. Design/Methodology/Approach: The analysis was developed by two essential components: the street and the buildings that define the character of the street by its architectural components, and their functional transformation since the nineteenth century. The axial character of the street has been evaluated due to selected criteria. The data is based on literature review, the survey of historical maps, visual materials such as photographs and gravure prints, and on-site observations. Findings: The street has been shaped and transformed by social, political, and economic developments, external and internal migrations, the influence of modernist architectural movements, urban reforms, Western innovations in transportation, and technical developments. Voyvoda Street's strong character as an axis is determined by its historical buildings, which are attached to each other continuously that form a wall defining the boundaries of the street. It is one of the essential pedestrian connections and functions as a path. Since most of the buildings lost their original functions, following the re-use for various needs, the service and cultural industries have become dominant. Although the historical characters of some buildings have been changed by new additions, the original silhouette of the nineteenth century is still dominant. Research Limitations/Implications: Visual materials and resources of some buildings were available in detail, while for some of them, the materials were limited. Originality/Value: The previous studies concentrated on urban, and architectural aspects of Galata district as a whole, whereas this study focused on the urban identity of Voyvoda Street. The street and the historical buildings that define the axial character and the image of the street by its architectural components, and their functional transformation have been analyzed.

Design trade-offs and considerations for improving the PCB current carrying capacity in high power density power electronics applications
(IEEE, 2022-03-24) Büyükdeğirmenci, Veysel Tutku; Kozarva, Ömer F.; Milletsever, Özgür C.; Hava, Ahmet Masum
This paper investigates printed circuit board (PCB) design trade-offs and considerations to maximize the current carrying capacity of traces in PCB-based power electronics applications. Many existing designs rely on methodologies through empirical data presented by the outdated IPC-2152 standard. A design methodology to maximize the utilized PCB area and improve thermal performance is introduced. To assess this methodology, lumped parameter (LP) and finite element (FE) models are developed and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are carried out. Thermal via placement strategies are investigated and maximum allowable power dissipation on the PCB traces is calculated. Simulations and analyses are experimentally validated on a PCB-based 100kW three-phase three-level inverter. The that results show that the thermal and electrical models discussed in this paper have superior accuracy compared to traditional formulations.
