    CSR practices in Turkey: Examining CSR reports

    This study examines the private companies that publish CSR reports in Turkey. Turkey has a growing economy, located in an international arena with an increasing number of global brands starting to export their products from Turkey with even more multinational enterprises (MNEs) planning to locate in the country. Now, some Turkish companies and subsidiaries of MNEs have started to publish CSR reports. Our findings show that strong Turkish conglomerates are playing a constructive role in macro-level development and governance in Turkey. They are also addressing local problems such as education, human rights, environmental protection and workers' rights. Besides, subsidiaries of MNEs are also having an impact with respect to the application of their headquarters' community programs in Turkish society.

    The moderating role of environmental munificence on innovativeness in B2B markets

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to understand the relationship between two business orientations, namely, entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation, and innovativeness taking into account the moderating influence of environmental munificence. Design/methodology/approach: This is a multiple respondent quantitative study. A total of 312 marketing managers middle level and above from 79 firms participated in the survey. Multiple regression and hierarchical multiple regression was the method of choice for data analysis. Findings: Findings indicate that environmental munificence moderates the entrepreneurial orientation – innovativeness relationship. Findings reveal that even though a significant impact of entrepreneurial orientation is not present on innovativeness, this insignificance may be due to environmental munificence. Market orientation has a direct positive impact on innovativeness, and environmental munificence negatively moderates this relationship suggesting that when the environment is less munificent, the market orientation – innovation link becomes stronger. Practical implications: Managers should be aware that the more munificent an environment becomes, having an entrepreneurial orientation will be more important for innovativeness. In addition, results of this study suggest that being market oriented more strongly impacts a firm’s ability to innovate in non-munificent environments where growth opportunities are undesirable. Originality/value: This study is unique in that it is a multi-respondent study with respondents from different layers of each participating organization, incorporating the moderating impact of the business environment’s munificence on business orientations–innovativeness relationship.

    Just a progressive step: women’s empowerment in Turkish microcredit practices

    In developing countries, the economic potential of women has long been under-utilized as a means of lifting households and communities out of poverty. In this respect, microcredit schemes offer an innovative form of social welfare, widely accessible to women. This study examines one such program from the Turkish context: the Maya Enterprise for Micro Finance, a conditional credit opportunity for women to start and/or develop their own businesses, granted by the Foundation for the Support of Women's Work (KEDV). Our study aimed to explore the impact of KEDV's credit transfer scheme on the lives of users, especially in terms of the psychological and economic empowerment of women. Deploying a mixed methods research strategy, we administered and analyzed quantitative surveys (n=336) in order to determine the perceptions, thoughts, insights and reactions of KEDV program users, also conducting qualitative interviews with 21 participants. Our findings indicate that the program was influential in empowering women by increasing their self-confidence and changing their relationship with other people in the household.

    Cointegration and adjustment dynamics of REIT and stock markets during the global financial and European debt crises

    This paper analyses the cointegration relationship between the REIT and stock markets of ten developed countries during the 2005-2013 period, which is characterised by the global financial and the European debt crises. Given the structural breaks in the data, the effect of these two crises is examined separately by dividing the sample period into four equal parts and by using M-TAR cointegration analysis. The results suggest that the cointegration between the stock and REIT markets was not a globally observed feature prior to the twin crises. The strong and globally valid cointegration observed after 2007 was due to the common negative response of both markets to the unexpected massive shocks. These shocks also led to bilateral causality and strong feedback effects between these two markets, thus strictly limiting the diversification benefits of the REIT market during the crisis period.

    Failure of an exchange-rate-based stabilization plan in Turkey

    The Turkish exchange-rate-based stabilization plan adopted in 2000 has been a spectacular failure, lasting a mere fourteen months despite a relatively flexible peg regime and preannounced exit strategy. The final three months of the currency regime were marred by the eruption of a banking sector crisis that quickly developed into a currency crisis, quelled only by external loans and a blanket guarantee by the sovereign of all banking sector liabilities. This was ultimately to no avail as the lira was allowed to float following a full-fledged currency crisis in late February 2001. The usual indicators of crisis did not point to imminent turmoil in November 2000 despite widespread concern about eventual dire developments. To identify the source of the November crisis, one must weigh the factors that led economic agents, and banks in particular, to expect higher interest rates after the fall.

    Location and determinants of productivity: The case of the manufacturing industry in Turkey

    Discussions in this paper are based on arguments from the geography, economic, and management literatures suggesting that exploring the spatial reasons for productivity in Turkey became significantly important after Turkey became a candidate country. The aim of this paper is to complement the findings of the studies on productivity differences in Turkey's manufacturing industry by exploring the spatial determinants of productivity at the regional level. The discussion is based on an econometric analysis for the years between 1980 and 2000. The results suggest that related variety, proximity to core areas, high wages, and capital intensity contribute to regional productivity.

    Advergaming - how does cognitive overload effect brand recall? Differences between in-game advertising (IGA) and advergames

    Advergaming serves as a new and valuable form of online advertising, especially for companies that target young consumers. This study examines the impacts of cognitive overload with placement prominence on respondents' brand recall, recognition and brand attitudes. An experiment was conducted on a group of university students with an exposure to an advergame under low and high cognitive load stimulus. Results showed that brands that are placed prominently are better recalled in high cognitive load condition. However, cognitive overload doesn't have any significant effect on the recognition of the main brand in which the advergames is specifically designed. Moreover, there is no difference in recall of subtly placed products in low and high cognitive load conditions. However, there is a significant difference in brand attitude in different cognitive loads. The study both investigated the context of advergames and as well in-game advertising (IGA) situations. The results of the study have both practical and theoretical implications.

    Public and private initiatives in skills training in Turkey

    The priorities 9th National Development Plan (NDP) covering the 2007-2013 period relevant to HRD-OP (Human Resources Development Operational Programme) involve supporting the priority of "increasing employment" which includes improving the employability of the target groups and strengthening the capacity of public employment services. The chapter reviews several training programmes which are offered by unions to their members. An important venture in this area is the joint MESS (Metal Employers' Association of Turkey) and Turk Metal (Metal Workers' Union of Turkey) project whose main objective is to provide a mechanism for continually improving the productivity and competitiveness of the metal industry as well as to provide ongoing skills development for employees.

    Employee ownership and management: The case of Kardemir iron and steel mill industry

    The information which was obtained through in-depth interviews with several informants on the general evaluation of the Kardemir privatization indicate that, whether or not Kardemir was introduced as a permanently successful model, its success was realistic at least until the year 2001, notwithstanding the fact that the present state of affairs seems to run counter to the general logic of labor unionism. The article then argues for a research agenda to re-examine and revise the ways that can make the employee ownership process more successful in the light of ongoing changes in employment relations at Kardemir Industry, Turkey.
