A new late holocene eolianite record from Altinkum Beach, North Cyprus
(Scientific technical research council Turkey-Tubitak, 2012-06) Erginal, Ahmet Evren; Güneç Kıyak, Nafiye; Ertek, Topçu Ahmet
In this study, we investigated the main depositional characteristics and obtained Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) ages of coastal eolianite on the north coast of Cyprus, where this occurrence had not previously been recorded. Based on EDX/SEM and XRD data and field observations, the studied eolianite that crops out between elevations of 1 m and 14 m a.s.l. is made up predominantly of quartz grains, most of which consist of medium- to fine-grained sand. The rock comprises aragonite, calcite and quartz with lesser amounts of bornite and hematite as accessory minerals. OSL ages indicated that the initial deposition of eolianite sands took place at 1.51 +/- 0.21 ka years ago.

Preliminary TL and OSL investigations of obsidian samples
(Univ Agean, Dept Mediterranean Stud, 2010) Polymeris, George S.; Gogou, D.; Afouxenidis, Dimitrios; Rapti, Sofia; Tsirliganis, Nestor C.; Kitis, George
Obsidian is a volcaniclastic mineral extremely hard to break, which was used in prehistoric Greece (and elsewhere in the World), in order to provide tools, weapons, knives and arrowheads. The present work aims to characterize this extremely precious tool stone by using both thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques and investigate its potential use for luminescence dating purposes. Basic TL and OSL properties, such as TL and OSL thermal and optical stability, repeatability, TL and LM-OSL glow curve shape and mainly the linearity of the TL and OSL signals as a function of beta dose were investigated. Artificially irradiated samples indicate all promising luminescence features, such as the 110 degrees C TL peak and dose response sub-linearity for intermediate doses, quick and effective bleaching all over the entire TL glow curve, along with quite linear CW-OSL dose response for doses larger than 5 Gy. The lack of predose sensitisation indicates the suitability of the material for single aliquot measurements. Furthermore, several features provide indications that the signal does not relate to quartz, but in fact to other silicates. Unfortunately, both lack of bleaching ability for NIL signal, along with a peculiar shape of NOSL, provide major difficulties in dating applications.

TL and OSL response of turquoise for dosimetric application
(University of Aegean, 2010) Subedi, Bhagawan; Afouxenidis, Dimitrios; Polymeris, George S.; Tsirliganis, Nestor C.; Paraskevopoulos, Konstantinos M.; Kitis, George
Turquoise is one of the amongst first gem stones used in jewelry and possessing cultural value since 2000 BC (at least). This work attempts characterize this stone scientifically using both thermally (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques. The experimental investigation included 1) the study of the natural TL and OSL signals, 2) the reproducibility of TL sensitivity over repeated irradiation and TL readout cycles, 3) dependence of sensitivity on annealing temperatures and 4) the TL and OSL dose response curves. The potential use of the TL and OSL techniques in determination of provenance, accidental dosimetry and probably to authenticity and dating purposes are then discussed.

Calix[4]amine Langmuir-Blodgett thin film sensing properties against volatile organic compounds
(IOP Publishing LTD, 2019) Şen, Sibel; Çapan, Rifat; Özbek, Zikriye; Özel, Mehmet Emin; Stanciu, Gheorghe A.; Davis, Frank
Thin films of CBAMINE were deposited at air-water interface by the method of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique onto a suitable substrate. Atomic force microscopy technique was used to characterize its thin film properties. The results indicate that a uniform LB film monolayer from the water surface to a glass or quartz crystal substrates deposited with a transfer ratio of over 96 %. Gas sensing properties and thickness of the LB thin films of CBAMINE were investigated using Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique. Its vapour sensing properties were investigated for different volatile organic compounds. Reversible changes in the optical behaviour were observed and thin films of this material are highly selective for chloroform vapour with fast response and recovery times.

Swelling of iota-carrageenan gels prepared with various CaCl2 content: A fluorescence study
(European Polymer Federation, 2008-01-05) Tarı İlgin, Özlem; Pekcan, Mehmet Önder
Iota carrageenan gels prepared with various CaCl2 content were completely dried and then swelled in water vapor. Steady-state fluorescence ( SSF) technique was used to monitor the swelling process of each iota carrageenan gels at various temperatures. Pyranine was used as a fluorescence probe. Apparent fluorescence intensity, I increased as swelling time increased for all gel samples. The increase in I was modelled using Li-Tanaka equation from which the swelling time constants, tau(1) and cooperative diffusion coefficients, D-c were determined. It was observed that D-c increased as the swelling temperature was increased. On the other hand at each temperature, it was seen that D-c decreased as CaCl2 content was increased. Activation energies for swelling were obtained and found to be 60.5, 61.0, 61.5 and 62.8 kJmol(-1) for the gels prepared with increasing amount of CaCl2 content.

Optically stimulated luminescence to date coastel dunes and a possible tsunami layer on the Kavak Delta (Saros Gulf, NW Turkey)
(Scientific Technical Research Council Turkey-Tubitak, 2009-01-21) Erginal, Ahmet Evren; Güneç Kıyak, Nafiye; Özcan, Hasan
Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was used to determine the timing of initial dune formation and reconstruct the evolution of coastal dunes that developed on the Kavak Delta, Saros Gulf, Turkey. Along a 500-mlong representative transect, dune sands were extracted from foredune, semistable (grey) dune, stable (dark) dune and dune-swamp boundary defined by a scarp 50?75 cm high. The data obtained showed that dune drift initiated 670 years ago. A pumice layer 15?20-cm-thick interbedded with marine clay and sand showed an OSL age of 340 years coinciding with underlying dune sand. XRF analysis showed that pumices were of similar composition to those erupted by plinian activity of Thera (Santorini) in 1628 BC. On the basis of OSL ages, these deposits, which are widely distributed on the western Anatolian coasts of Turkey, might have presumably transported landward along tide channels on the delta during a tsunami event that occurred in 1672 near Bozcaada and Kos islands according to tsunami history of the Aegean Sea.

A comparative morphological, compositional and tl study of tenedos (Bozcaada) and Sile aeolianites, Turkey
(Univ Agean, 2012) Polymeris, George S.; Erginal, Ahmet Evren; Güneç Kıyak, Nafiye
Aeolianites are carbonate-cemented deposits of coastal dune sands, mostly of Quaternary age. Even though aeolianite exposures on the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea are frequent, very few records have been documented from the coasts of either the Aegean or the Black Sea. The present study deals with evaluating and comparing both compositions and thermoluminescence (TL) ages of two recently reported samples of coastal aeolianites. Both were recovered at the Turkish coasts of Tenedos (Bozcaada) island, Aegean Sea and Şile, Western Black Sea. In the latter case, being the first record for the specific coastal area, the oldest age obtained was dated at 158±25 ka while the youngest age yielded was 108±14 ka. These values imply that both deposition and cementation occurred during the high sea stand of marine isotope stage 5 (MIS 5). In the case of Tenedos, the aeolianites were deposited between the early stage of the oxygen isotope stage 2 period (OIS 2) and the very late phase of the oxygen isotope stage 3 period (OIS 3). These latter TL results are in excellent agreement with a previous study of the same complex after applying OSL. Besides the ages, a number of luminescent features and properties in conjunction with compositional data suggest the dissimilarity for the quartz samples extracted from the aeolianites recovered at these two sampling sites, excluding thus any transport from one sampling site to the other, despite the short distance of the two sampling sites and the meteorological data regarding the preferable wind directions between them.

Evolutionary route to diploidy and sex
(National Academy of Sciences, 2001-11-20) Tüzel, Erkan; Sevim, Volkan; Erzan, Ayşe
By using a bit-string model of evolution, we find a successful route to diploidy and sex in simple organisms. Allowing the sexually reproducing diploid individuals to also perform mitosis, as they do in a haploid-diploid cycle, leads to the complete takeover of the population by sexual diploids. This mechanism is so robust that even the accidental conversion and pairing of only two diploids give rise to a sexual population.
