    On the extraction of the channel allocation information in spectrum pooling systems

    The spectrum pooling strategy allows a license owner to share a part of his licensed spectrum with a secondary wireless system (the rental system, RS) during its idle times. The coexistence of two mobile systems on the same frequency band poses many new challenges, one of which is the reliable extraction of the channel allocation information (CAI), i.e. the channel occupation of the licensed system (LS). This paper presents a strategy for the extraction of the CAI based on exploiting the distinct cyclostationary characteristics of the LS and RS signals and demonstrates, via simulations, its application on a specific spectrum pooling scenario, where the LS is a GSM network and the RS is an OFDM based WLAN system.

    Programlamaya giriş dersi öğrencilerinin öz yeterlilik algıları ve derse yönelik tutumlarının cinsiyet ve eğitim diline göre incelenmesi

    Bu araştırmanın amacı F.M.V. Işık Üniversitesi Mühendislik Fakültesinde öğrenim gören öğrencilerin genel öz-yeterlilik algılarının ve Programlamaya Giriş(CSE101) dersine yönelik tutumlarının; cinsiyet ve eğitim aldıkları programın diline (Türkçe-İngilizce) göre incelenmesidir. Araştırmaya 40 kadın ve 74 erkek olmak üzere toplam 114 üniversite öğrencisi katılmıştır. Öğrencilerin öz yeterlilik algılarını ölçmek için Genel Öz Yeterlilik ölçeği kullanılmış, ders sonucunu (başarı ve başarısızlık) değerlendirmeleri için açık uçlu sorular sorulmuş ve yaş, cinsiyet gibi temel demografik bilgileri alınmıştır. Açık uçlu sorular niteliksel (kalitatif) analiz yöntemi ile incelenmiştir. Yapılan niceliksel analiz sonucunda öğrencilerin genel öz-yeterlilik puanları ile genel not ortalaması arasında anlamlı, CSE101 dersi dönem sonu not ortalaması arasında ise anlamsız bir ili ki olduğu bulgulanmıştır. Ayrıca öğrencilerin öz-yeterlilik puanlarının cinsiyete ve eğitim aldıkları dile göre (Türkçe-İngilizce) değişmediği görülmüştür. Öğrencilerin motivasyon puanları da eğitim aldıkları dile göre farklılaşmamaktadır. Niteliksel analiz bulgularına göre ise öğrencilerin verdiği cevapların yüzde sıklık değerlerinin cinsiyetleri açısından değiştiği görülmüştür. Bu çalışmanın sonuçları özellikle öğrencilerin derse yönelik tutumlarında cinsiyet açısından bir farklılık olduğunu göstermesi ile mühendislik programlama eğitiminde öğrenci başarısını yordayan değişkenlerin tespit edilmesi sürecine katkı sağlaması beklenmektedir.

    Evaluative, inclusive, participatory: Developing a new language with children for school building design

    This paper emphasises the attribute of Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) in school (re) design by extending the research toward genuine participation and evaluation. It aims to re-conceptualise “child’s participation” through exploring its relationship with POE by observing child-built environment connection and by demonstrating how children engage with the problems of school design. This empirically grounded research presents eight workshops with three different schools in Albania. It explores the process, outcomes, challenges, and opportunities during the active involvement of a total of 502 children aged 10–14 years old. The research incorporates a multiplicity of techniques from both creative and evaluative methods: essays, wish poem, drawing, model making, poster design, visual/POE questionnaire and walk-through are some that ensure a comprehensive achievement of children in the process. The study confirms the utility of participation in school design as a tool to propose child-oriented spaces. Within the results, six design concepts of the desired school building of children are identified. These are flexibility, horizontality, campus-like environment, transparency, accessibility, and ecological concept. We propose a participation language based on the experience, perception, imagination, and active involvement of the children in the learning environments. It concludes that children participation builds upon a spatial experience which lies on the child-school relationship. Language is dynamic and allows researchers and designer to edit and annotate whenever needed, but by always referring to the school of children active and present in participation. It emphasises the POE-participation connection and to further open the discourse of participation to the Albanian public.
