    I (dis)like the way you (dis)like them: The role of extended contact on social distance and attitudes towards the ingroup

    While extended intergroup contact has been commonly studied in the context of prejudice reduction, less is known about its implications for processes related to the ingroup. Through three correlational and one experimental studies (total N = 897) conducted in two different intergroup contexts (Turkey and United Kingdom), we investigated whether extended intergroup contact relates to social distance and attitudes towards ingroup members as a function of outgroup attitudes. We also investigated ingroup identification and perceived ingroup morality as potential mediators in these associations. Correlational studies demonstrated that especially when outgroup attitudes were more negative, participants' positive (but not negative) extended contact was related to a more negative evaluation of the ingroup; whereas when outgroup attitudes were more positive, extended contact was associated with positive attitudes towards the ingroup. We found experimental evidence for the suggested relationships in relation to ingroup social distance. Findings are discussed in the light of vicarious dissonance theory and deprovincialization hypothesis.

    When imagining intergroup contact mobilizes collective action: The perspective of disadvantaged and advantaged groups

    The current studies aimed to reveal the potential role of imagined intergroup contact on collective action tendencies within a context of intergroup conflict. Study 1 (disadvantaged Kurds, N = 80) showed that imagined contact increased collective action tendencies and this effect was mediated by increased perceived discrimination and ethnic identification. Study 2 (advantaged Turks, N = 127) demonstrated that imagined contact also directly increased collective action tendencies, as well as perceived discrimination and relative deprivation among the advantaged group. No significant mediation emerged. At the same time, in line with literature, imagined contact led only the advantaged group members to display more positive outgroup attitudes. Findings suggest that in settings where ingroup identities and conflict are salient, imagined contact may not readily undermine motivation for social change among group members.

    Moral reasoning and moral orientation of U.S. and Turkish university students

    Participants from an individualistic society (USA) were compared with participants from a collectivistic society (Turkey) in terms of moral reasoning and orientation (justice and care). A total of 396 undergraduates (203 U.S. students, 193 Turkish students) between the ages of 18 and 46 years were administered the original version of the Defining Issues Test and the Measure of Moral Orientation. Turkish participants received higher mean principled scores than did the U.S. participants, and female participants received higher mean principled scores than did male participants. Turkish participants also scored significantly higher on the justice and care orientations than U.S. participants, and female participants scored significantly higher on the justice and care orientations than male participants.

    Associations between perceived positive and negative parental contact and adolescents' intergroup contact experiences

    This study investigated the association between perceived parental positive and negative contact and adolescents' own positive and negative contact experiences and tested perspective-taking, intergroup anxiety, outgroup attitudes, and approach behavioral tendencies as potential mediators. A total of 325 7th and 8th Year Turkish students completed questionnaires in classrooms (M-age = 13.46, SD = 0.75). Structural equation models demonstrated that percieved negative parental contact was directly and strongly associated with negative, but not positive, adolescent contact, whereas parental positive contact had a direct positive association with adolescent positive contact. We further found that perceived parental positive contact was related to higher perspective-taking and lower intergroup anxiety which promoted approach behavioral tendencies which was, in turn, related to more positive and less negative contact among adolescents. The study highlights the critical function of parental positive and negative contact on the formation of adolescents' contact behaviors.

    The relationship between conflict management styles used by nurse managers in psychiatric clinics and the stress level of their subordinates

    Objectives: This study aimed to determine the relationship between the opinions of nurses working in psychiatric wards regarding their managers' conflict management styles and their self-perceived stress levels. Methods: This was a descriptive, comparative, and correlational study. The population consisted of 580 nurses working in psychiatric clinics of public and private hospitals in Istanbul, and 199 nurses were included in the sample. The "Personal Information Form," "Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory–II (ROCI-II) Form A," and "Perceived Stress Scale" were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using frequency and percentage distributions, the Kruskal–Wallis test, Spearman correlation analysis, and the Mann–Whitney U test. Results: The participants’ mean scores on the Conflict Management Scale were as follows: integration subscale 2.50±0.90; obliging subscale 3.03±0.74; dominating subscale 2.92±0.85; avoiding subscale 2.98±0.66; and compromising subscale 2.61±0.83. The mean score of the Perceived Stress Scale was 13.78±4.74. The mean score for the perceived stress subdimension was 4.49±2.04, and for the perceived coping subdimension was 9.30±3.45. A statistically significant, weak positive correlation was found between the perceived stress subdimension and the dominating subscale, while a weak negative correlation was observed with the compromising and integration subdimensions. A weak negative correlation was also found between the perceived coping subdimension and the integration, obliging, and compromising subdimensions. Conclusion: According to the nurses, their managers most frequently use obliging, avoiding, dominating, compromising, and integration styles, respectively, in conflict management. As managers’ use of compromising and integration styles increases, the nurses’ perceived stress levels decrease.
