Automatic modulation classification for mimo systems using fourth-order cumulants
(IEEE, 2012) Mühlhaus, Michael S.; Öner, Mustafa Mengüç; Dobre, Octavia Adina; Jkel, Holger U.; Jondral, Friedrich K.
Automatic classification of the modulation type of an unknown communication signal is a challenging task, with applications in both commercial and military contexts, such as spectrum surveillance, cognitive radio, and electronic warfare systems. Most of the automatic modulation classification (AMC) algorithms found in the literature assume that the signal of interest has been transmitted using a single antenna. In this paper, a novel AMC algorithm for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) signals is proposed, which employs fourth-order cumulants as features for classification. First, perfect channel state information (CSI) is assumed. Subsequently, a case of more practical relevance is considered, where the channel matrix is unknown and has to be estimated blindly by employing independent component analysis (ICA). The performance of the proposed classification algorithm is investigated through simulations and compared with an average likelihood ratio test (ALRT) which can be considered as optimum in the Bayesian sense, but has a very high computational complexity.

Coupled quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equations in a generalized elastic solid
(IOP Publishing Ltd, 2004-10-08) Hacınlıyan, Irma; Erbay, Saadet
In the present study, the nonlinear modulation of transverse waves propagating in a cubically nonlinear dispersive elastic medium is studied using a multiscale expansion of wave solutions. It is found that the propagation of quasimonochromatic transverse waves is described by a pair of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger (CNLS) equations. In the process of deriving the amplitude equations, it is observed that for a specific choice of material constants and wavenumber, the coefficient of nonlinear terms becomes zero, and the CNLS equations are no longer valid for describing the behaviour of transverse waves. In order to balance the nonlinear effects with the dispersive effects, by intensifying the nonlinearity, a new perturbation expansion is used near the critical wavenumber. It is found that the long time behaviour of the transverse waves about the critical wavenumber is given by a pair of coupled quintic nonlinear Schrodinger (CQNLS) equations. In the absence of one of the transverse waves, the CQNLS equations reduce to the single quintic nonlinear Schrodinger (QNLS) equation which has already been obtained in the context of water waves. By using a modified form of the so-called tanh method, some travelling wave solutions of the CQNLS equations are presented.

Optical design of the adaptive optics system for DAG, the new 4 m Turkish telescope
(SPIE, 2020) Bouxin, Audrey; Jolissaint, Laurent; Keskin, Onur; Yeşilyaprak, Cahit; Spanò, Paolo
We present the design of the Adaptive Optics System for the new Turkish 4-m telescope (DAG). The AO will use a pyramid WFS, with a double prism and a no noise EM-CCD camera to allow for oversampling of the pupil images and a relaxation of the prism manufacturing tolerances. In order to use the high modal resolution of the P-WFS allowed by the adjustment of the modulation angle, we implement a high order deformable mirror with 468 actuators, which will permit to use the system in extreme AO correction mode. The P-WFS optical design has been largely inspired by NFIRAOS truth WFS. The number of optical surfaces has been reduced to the bare minimum. An atmospheric dispersion compensator is introduced around the tip-tilt modulation mirror. In this proceeding, we present the detail of the optical design steps for all the components of the system.

Space time block code classification for MIMO signals exploiting cyclostationarity
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc, 2015) Turan, Merve; Öner, Mustafa Mengüç; Çırpan, Hakan Ali
Blind and noncooperative identification of the transmission parameters of unknown communication signals has been employed both in military and civilian applications. Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission systems emerging in the last decade pose new challenges to the signal identification systems, one of which is the identification of the Space-Time Block Code (STBC) used in the transmission. In this work, we present a novel STBC classification algorithm that exploits the joint wide sense cyclostationary characteristics of the coded transmit signals as discriminating features. Compared to existing algorithms, the proposed method can discriminate between a large number of different STBCs.

Design and performance analysis of a novel trellis coded space-time-frequency OFDM transmission scheme
(Wiley-Blackwell, 2008-01) Oğuz, Onur; Aygölü, Hasan Ümit; Panayırcı, Erdal
In this paper a new transmit diversity technique is proposed for wireless communications over frequency selective fading channels. The proposed technique utilises orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to transform a frequency selective fading channel into multiple flat fading subchannels on which first space-frequency coding and then additional space-time coding are applied resulting in a space-time-frequency OFDM (STF-OFDM) scheme. This scheme provides a quasi-orthogonal 4 x 4 transmission matrix but relax the constraint on channel fading parameters to be constant over four time or frequency slots into two time and two frequency slots. The pairwise error probability of the new scheme is evaluated and new code design criteria are obtained to improve the error performance. 64-, 128- and 256-state 4-PSK trellis codes for STF transmission scheme are generated based on these criteria and their frame error performances in an OFDM system are evaluated by computer simulations.

On the performance of trellis coded M-PSK systems over Rician fading channels with phase jitter
(Assoc Elettrotecnica Ed Elettronica Italiana, 2001-02) Uysal, Murat; Aygölü, Hasan Ümit; Panayırcı, Erdal
In this paper, the performance of trellis coded M-PSK systems is investigated operating over Rician fading channels with phase jitter. Thus the results reflect not only the degradation due to the effect of fading on the amplitude of the received signal, but also the impairment caused by the noisy carrier reference, which is usually neglected by the assumption of perfect phase tracking at the receiver. Analytical upper bounds on pairwise error probability for Rician fading with phase jitter are derived using Chernoff bounding technique in both cases where channel state information is available or not. The bit error probability performances are evaluated based on the modified transfer function approach. The numerical examples clearly demonstrate the error performance degradation due to both amplitude fading and phase noise process.

Resource allocation in the finite blocklength regime under PAoI and delay violation constraints
(IEEE, 2023-08-27) Kartal, Özkan Tuğberk; Kaya, Onur; Uysal, Elif
URLLC (Ultra-reliable low-latency communication) is one of the more challenging modes for 5G for resource allocation (RA). Most of the previous studies for RA for wireless access in URLLC assumed known packet arrival processes, and focused on maximizing average rates or throughput. The objective of this paper is to present a formulation of allocating resource blocks, modulation and coding rates to multiple short packet machine-type information flows to provide information age and delay violation guarantees. The scenario is motivated by the scheduling of URLLC flows among users served by a common 5G base station. The problem involves the selections of frequency allocation policy and modulation and coding scheme (MCS) under estimated CSI. Moreover, the sensitivity of the information packet size on the choice of modulation and coding parameters as well as the number of resource blocks and the choice of the number of pilot symbols is demonstrated. The results of this formulation are compared with resource allocation algorithms in the literature.
