Gamification of design studio in the context of a user-centered design workshop
    (ASLERD, 2023-09) Karadağ, Derya
In project studios and workshops, students from many design disciplines, such as architectural, interior, and industrial design, apply theory and practice. Design research, conceptualization, development, communication, and interactive teamwork are the fundamental factors that unify different disciplines in project studios. The project studio is a rich environment where design thinking methods are implemented and original, creative ideas and designs are generated. In this setting, the design studio instructors' approaches, frameworks, and applied design thinking exercises gain significance. This paper examines the contributions of gamification components to design thinking methodology and the design studio, using the User-Centered Design Workshop as a case study.

Evaluative, inclusive, participatory: Developing a new language with children for school building design
(Elsevier Ltd, 2021-01-15) Manahasa, Odeta; Özsoy, Ahsen; Manahasa, Edmond
This paper emphasises the attribute of Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) in school (re) design by extending the research toward genuine participation and evaluation. It aims to re-conceptualise “child’s participation” through exploring its relationship with POE by observing child-built environment connection and by demonstrating how children engage with the problems of school design. This empirically grounded research presents eight workshops with three different schools in Albania. It explores the process, outcomes, challenges, and opportunities during the active involvement of a total of 502 children aged 10–14 years old. The research incorporates a multiplicity of techniques from both creative and evaluative methods: essays, wish poem, drawing, model making, poster design, visual/POE questionnaire and walk-through are some that ensure a comprehensive achievement of children in the process. The study confirms the utility of participation in school design as a tool to propose child-oriented spaces. Within the results, six design concepts of the desired school building of children are identified. These are flexibility, horizontality, campus-like environment, transparency, accessibility, and ecological concept. We propose a participation language based on the experience, perception, imagination, and active involvement of the children in the learning environments. It concludes that children participation builds upon a spatial experience which lies on the child-school relationship. Language is dynamic and allows researchers and designer to edit and annotate whenever needed, but by always referring to the school of children active and present in participation. It emphasises the POE-participation connection and to further open the discourse of participation to the Albanian public.

Designing an interactive non-linear documentary contributed by public participation suburbs of Istanbul
(Association for Computing Machinery, 2020-07-03) Çevikayak Yelmi, Pınar; Bayar, Tulu
Suburbs of Istanbul is a web-based interactive documentary project that examines the identity of suburban neighborhoods in Istanbul through the participation of its residents via online submission of their visual and written stories. Public participation also led the design process and helped prototype the interfaces of this non-linear documentary. This project aims to contribute to the field of interactive documentary and non-linear storytelling by integrating participatory design techniques in the prototyping process of documentary interfaces. Involving public both as content providers and as active decision makers in design process lead to a more genuine outcome with a human-centered approach. This project also intends to create an interactive experience to provide a greater insight into rapidly changing lifestyles of Turkish people, to provide a global context to the stories presented, and to generate widespread awareness of issues surrounding suburban lifestyles across the world.

A new frontier in design studio: AI and human collaboration in conceptual design
(KeAi Communications Co., 2025-12) Karadağ, Derya; Ozar, Betül
This study explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the conceptual design phase of interior design education, focusing on AI's potential to help students visualise and refine creative ideas. Conducted within a design studio course, the research integrates text-to-image generators, particularly Midjourney to support students' design processes. Implemented in the fourth week of a 14-week course, a structured workshop introduced students to Midjourney, with surveys conducted both at this stage and during the final submission to capture changes in student perspectives. Using a two-phase case study involving a workshop, surveys, and interviews among senior undergraduate students in the bachelor's program of the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department, the study assesses the impact of AI prompts, from simple keywords to detailed narratives, on concept development and project outcomes. Findings indicate that AI broadens design possibilities, facilitates iterative ideation, and improves conceptual precision through high-fidelity visualizations. While students view AI as a valuable addition to their creative process, they also express concerns about ethics and the need to balance AI's benefits with preserving design authenticity. This research contributes to the broader discussion on AI's role in design, advocating for a balanced integration that respects both technological potential and human creativity.

Vertical design studio experience in interior architecture education
(Eastern Mediterranean University, 2018-04) Adıgüzel Özbek, Derya; Melikoğlu Eke, Armağan Seçil; Yücesan, Ebru; Ozar, Betül
Design studios are at the core of interior architecture education. Environments where “learners form their own learning” enhance the communication between the teacherlearner, and learner–learner. Within this scope, the organization of design studios and the models that are applied are still the crucial research subjects on which teaching interior architecture works on. This paper investigates into the vertical interior design studio experience that is rebuilt in accordance with contemporary approaches towards studio education. Vertical interior design studio experience is built on associations, separations and on the interrelations between these associations and separations. The other input of this formation is the relations, associations, separations among the students within the group. The vertical studio setup that is applied during the 2016- 2017Fall Semester at Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design of FMV Işık University is examined in terms of its construction, experience process, outputs and further critical investigation is carried out on the learning method.
