On the effect of random sampling jitter on cyclostationarity based spectrum sensing algorithms for cognitive radio
    (IEEE, 2009) Öner, Mustafa Mengüç
Cognitive radio is an enabling technology, which is expected to lead to a more efficient utilization of the available spectral resources due to its flexibility and its ability to sense its spectral environment. Recently, spectrum sensing methods based on exploiting the cyclostationary characteristics of communication signals have been drawing considerable interest. Imperfections in the cognitive radio receiver that affect the cyclic statistics of a signal of interest may lead to a degradation in the performance of spectrum sensing algorithms based on cyclostationarity. One such typical source of imperfection is random timing jitter in the sampling process. In this work, we explore the effect of random sampling jitter on the second order cyclostationary statistics of wide sense cyclostationary signals. General analytical expressions are derived for the cyclic statistics of sampled signals in the presence of sampling jitter and specific results are provided for two cases of interest. Subsequently, the effect of the jitter on a spectrum sensing algorithm is investigated via simulations.

A broadband microwave amplifier design by means of immittance based data modelling tool
(IEEE, 2002) Kılınç, Ali; Pınarbaşı, Hacı; Şengül, Metin; Yarman, Bekir Sıddık Binboğa
In this paper a practical broadband microwave amplifier design algorithm is introduced utilizing the immittance data-modelling tool. In the course of design, first, the optimum input and output terminations for the active device are produced employing the real frequency technique. Then, these terminations are modelled utilizing the new immittance-modelling tool to synthesize the front-end and back-end matching networks. An example is included to exhibit the implementation of the proposed design algorithm to construct a single stage BJT amplifier over a wide frequency band. It is expected that the proposed design algorithm will find applications to realize wideband microwave amplifiers put on MMIC for mobile communication.

Analysis of self noise in a clock recovery systems with a high-order nonlinearity
    (IEEE, 1998) Panayırcı, Erdal
This paper presents a new technique to compute efficiently the I and Q spectra, and the I - Q cross-spectrum of the self noise appearing at the output of the zero-memory, high order nonlinear device employed in a clock recovery system. It is known that these spectra play an important role in the phase jitter performance of the clock regenerator. The results are very general and applicable to many cases of practical interest. A numerical example provided at the end of the paper shows that the new approach yields very accurate results and is much faster that the usual computer simulation method.

Circuit model for given reflectance data constructed with mixed lumped and distributed elements for high speed/high frequency communication systems
(IEEE, 2005) Yarman, Bekir Sıddık Binboğa; Şengül, Metin; Kılınç, Ali; Aksen, Ahmet
In this paper, a reflectance-based "non linear interpolation method" is presented to model the measured or computed data, obtained from a "passive one-port physical device" using mixed lumped and distributed elements. Mixed element model is constructed with cascade connection of series inductors [L], commensurate transmission lines or so called Unit Elements [UE] and shunt capacitors[C]. Basis of the new model rests on the numerical generation of the scattering parameters of the lossless two-port constructed with cascade connection of simple [L]-[UE]-[C] elements which describes a lossless 2-port in Darlington sense. The new modeling technique does not require direct optimization of the circuit elements of the selected topology. Rather, two-variable reflection coefficient is directly determined by means of a non linear but "convergence guaranteed" interpolation process to best fit the given data. A low-pass filter input reflection coefficient modeling example is included to exhibit the utilization of the proposed modeling method.

Design and simulation of miniaturized communication systems employing symmetrical lossless two-ports constructed with two kinds of elements
(IEEE, 2003) Yarman, Bekir Sıddık Binboğa; Aksen, Ahmet; Çimen, Ebru Gürsu
In this paper, a semi-analytic method is presented to describe symmetrical lossless networks with two-kinds of elements, namely, distributed and lumped elements in cascade connection. in terms of the independently chosen parameters, element values of the lossless symmetrical networks are given by explicit formulas up to nine elements. It is expected that the results presented in this paper will find immediate usage in performance assessment, design and simulation of analog/digital wireless communication systems put on MMICs or VLSI chips.

An endoscopie imaging system based on a two-dimensional CMUT array: real-time imaging results
(IEEE, 2005) Wygant, Ira O.; Zhuang, Xuefeng; Yeh, David T.; Vaithilingam, Srikant; Nikoozadeh, Amin; Oralkan, Ömer; Ergün, Arif Sanlı; Karaman, Mustafa; Khuri-Yakub, Butrus Thomas
Real-time catheter-based ultrasound imaging tools are needed for diagnosis and image-guided procedures. The continued development of these tools is partially limited by the difficulty of fabricating two-dimensional array geometries of piezoelectric transducers. Using capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) technology, transducer arrays with widely varying geometries, high frequencies, and wide bandwidths can be fabricated. A volumetric ultrasound imaging system based on a two-dimensional, 16×l6-element, CMUT array is presented. Transducer arrays with operating frequencies ranging from 3 MHz to 7.5 MHz were fabricated for this system. The transducer array including DC bias pads measures 4 mm by 4.7 mm. The transducer elements are connected to flip-chip bond pads on the array back side with 400-?m long through-wafer interconnects. The array is flip-chip bonded to a custom-designed integrated circuit (IC) that comprises the front-end electronics. Integrating the front-end electronics with the transducer array reduces the effects of cable capacitance on the transducer's performance and provides a compact means of connecting to the transducer elements. The front-end IC provides a 27-V pulser and 10-MHz bandwidth amplifier for each element of the array. An FPGA-based data acquisition system is used for control and data acquisition. Output pressure of 230 kPa was measured for the integrated device. A receive sensitivity of 125 mV/kPa was measured at the output of the amplifier. Amplifier output noise at 5 Mhz is 112 nV/?Hz. Volumetric images of a wire phantom and vessel phantom are presented. Volumetric data for a wire phantom was acquired in real-time at 30 frames per second.

A parametric approach to construct two-variable positive real impedance functions for the real frequency design of mixed lumped-distributed matching networks
(IEEE, 2004) Aksen, Ahmet; Pınarbaşı, Hacı; Yarman, Bekir Sıddık Binboğa
In this paper, a parametric approach to construct two-variable positive real driving point impedance functions characterizing lossless ladder networks with mixed lumped and distributed elements is presented. The proposed approach is based on the generation of two-variable positive real impedance functions from the single variable boundary conditions. Utilizing the proposed parametric construction algorithm, real frequency matching technique is extended to the design of matching networks with mixed lumped and distributed elements. The application of the approach is illustrated by a broadband microwave amplifier design incorporating mixed lumped and distributed type matching networks. The resultant design has been compared with the AWR Microwave Office software simulation.

This paper presents the experimental results on forward-looking Intravascular ultrasound (FL-IVUS) using dual-annular-ring CMUT arrays. The array has a diameter of 1mm including bondpads which consists of separate, concentric 24 transmit and 32 receive ring arrays built on the same silicon substrate. This configuration has the potential for Independent optimization of each array and uses the silicon area more effectively without any drawback. For imaging experiments, we designed and constructed a custom integrated circuit using a standard 0.5 mu m CMOS process for data acquisition. A sample pulse-echo signal received from the oil-air Interface (plane reflector) at 6mm had a center frequency of 11MHz with 95% fractional 6-dB bandwidth. The measured SNR of the echo was 24 dB with no averaging. B-scan image of a wire-phantom was generated to test the resolution.
