    Digital transformation and universities

    Purpose- This study aims to examine how digitalization has affected and changed higher education. It focuses on the current situation of universities and their current processes and what they need to do to become digital. It aims to present a roadmap for universities to integrate and organize these important changes into their strategies by examining the digital transformation that affects the vision of universities. Methodology- The study employs a literature review using secondary data analysis. Findings- The analysis reveals that the role of universities in many aspects such as society and economy has changed and is expected to change disruptively over the next decade. Universities need to make a differentiation through emerging business models in such a competitive higher education sector. Higher education institutions have to adapt to technological changes for sustainabilty. The pandemic dramatically accelerated the pace of technological adoption worldwide. The drivers of digital transformation in universiteis can be summarized as the increase compteteiveness, user experience and agility while reduction in operating expenses. Conclusion- It may be concluded that a university should be part of present technological trends and include digitalization in their strategies to be competitive in the future. Universities need to focus mainly on exploring more innovative measures to create technology development centres through research to deal with skills shortages. Universities should support those academics who lead the improvement of digital skills and innovative teaching methods, promote digital literacy in the academia and encourage the use of learning platforms. It is important to set a clear policy to adopt digital age in higher education. Universities will be competing globally for students, academic staff and funding. Adoption and implementation of new technologies in universities are inevitable.

    Vakıf üniversitesinde okuyan öğrencilerin “Vakıf Üniversitesi Öğrencisi” olmaya dair söylemleri

    Bu çalışmanın amacı, vakıf üniversitelerinde okuyan öğrencilerin “vakıf üniversitesi öğrencisi” olmaya dair açıklamalarının incelenmesidir. Bu amaçla, vakıf üniversitelerinde okumakta olan öğrencilerle derinlemesine görüşmeler yapılmış ve öğrencilerin açıklamalarına kaynaklık eden söylemlere bakılmıştır. Çalışma kapsamında; çoğunluğu 20’li yaşlarda olmakla birlikte, 18-45 yaş aralığında 19 vakıf üniversitesi öğrencisi ile görüşülmüştür; 12 öğrenci ile bireysel görüşme yapılmış, diğerleriyle de 2 ayrı odak grup görüşmesi yapılmıştır. Görüşmeler yarı-yapılandırılmış tarzda yürütülmüş ve ses kayıt cihazı ile kaydedilmiştir. Kaydedilen görüşmeler, söylem analizi tekniği ile analiz edilmek üzere yazıya dökülmüştür. Görüşmelerin analizi sonucunda; katılımcıların açıklamalarının “vakıf üniversitesine dair söylemler” ve “vakıf üniversitesi öğrencisi olmaya dair söylemler” şeklinde iki başlık altında toplandığı görülmüştür. Vakıf üniversitesine dair söylemler başlığı altında iki temaya ulaşılmıştır; “eğitim kalitesi” ve “erişim kolaylığı”. Benzer şekilde, vakıf üniversitesi öğrencisi olmaya dair söylemler başlığı altında da iki farklı temaya ulaşılmıştır; “başarısız/yetersiz öğrenci” ve “ayrıcalıklı/zengin öğrenci”. Ayrıca katılımcıların açıklamalarında “kendini olumsuzlamaya karşı kendini eşitleme” şeklinde bir ideolojik ikilemin söz konusu olduğu görülmüştür. Analiz sonuçları bir bütün olarak ele alındığında, “vakıf üniversitesi”nin ve “vakıf üniversitesi öğrencisi”nin öncelikle olumsuz bir şekilde anlamlandırıldığı görülmektedir. Her ne kadar vakıf üniversitelerinin bazı açılardan olumlu yönleri veya avantajları olduğu söylense de özellikle “eğitimin kalitesi” ve “akademisyenlerin niteliği” bakımından devlet üniversitelerine kıyasla daha olumsuz değerlendirildiği; bununla bağlantılı şekilde vakıf üniversitesi öğrencisinin de devlet üniversitesi öğrencisine göre daha “başarısız/yetersiz” olarak konumlandırıldığı söylenebilir.

    Financial sustainability of higher education system

    Purpose- Financial sustainability is vital for the higher education systems in the global competitive atmosphere of the world of 2020s. This paper reviews a comparative analysis between the budgets and expenditures of the Turkish and British higher education systems, beside a view on those of the OECD countries. This paper intends to clarify Turkish higher education system’s difficulties in financial sustainability to provide required academic standards due to increasing costs and number of students versus the economic strength of significant actors such as the United Kingdom in the globalized competition. For this reason, this paper advocates cost advantages provided by the application of effective online education model to acquire financial sustainability clarifying the rise of digital universities by the 2030s. Methodology-. The study employs a literature review aiming to perform a comparative analysis on the financial structures of Turkish and British higher education systems. Moreover, OECD data were also reflected. The aim was to identify the possible difficulties of Turkish higher education system in financial sustainability to provide required academic standards in the competitive global area and find a contemporary solution. Findings- The analysis reveals that the Turkish higher education system have disadvantages in providing financial sustainability under the conditions of increasing costs as well as number of students in order to reach the required standards in the global league. Notably, it is clearly seen that efective application of online education strategy is an opportunity to balance revenues and expenditures in this way. As a matter of the fact, the effect of digital transformation era and the attitude of Generation Z students have already prepared this atmosphere. Conclusion-. Governments highly financed higher education systems after 20th Century. However, financial problems emerged due to increasing number of students and increasing costs. Eventhough the budgets had continuously been increased, Turkish higher education system have realized lower expenditures in the OECD average. Problems in financial sustainability to provide required academic standards have clearly been noticed in the global competitive atmosphere while compared with the example of the United Kingdom. Over the Covid19 crisis, universities successfully implemented hybrid education around the world increasing the effect of online systems forced by Generation Z’s perspective on embracing Digital Technologies. So, effective application of online education model appeared as a new opportunity for Turkish higher education system to provide financial sustainability decreasing costs and also efficiently compete in the global area. Indeed, blended learning in traditional universities and inevitable growth of digital higher education institutions named as University 5.0 will be seen after 2030s.

    Yüksek öğretim kurumlarındaki çağdaş sanat eğitimi müfredatının yeni medya sanatını kapsayıcılığı

    Bu çalışma ile Türkiye’deki üniversitelerde(vakıf/devlet) lisans seviyesindeki çağdaş sanat eğitimi müfredatının yeni medya sanatını kapsayıcılığı araştırılmıştır. Bu amaçla yüksek öğretim kurumlarındaki; Sanat Tarihi, Resim, Grafik, Grafik Tasarımı, Görsel İletişim Tasarımı, Medya ve Görsel Sanatlar programlarının hali hazırdaki ders programları web üzerinden incelenmiştir. 1980’li yıllardan itibaren özellikle de internetin keşfiyle gelişen yeni medya sanatları ve eğitimi ülkemizde batılı anlamda (müfredat+media lab) sadece vakıf üniversitelerinde kendine ciddi bir yer edinmiş, devlet üniversitelerinde sadece fotoğraf, video sanatı şeklinde, geleneksel sanat müfredatı içerisinde son derece kısıtlı bir çerçevede ele alınmıştır. Devlet üniversitelerinde yeni medya sanatları sayılı seçmeli ders olarak müfredata girebilmiştir.

    Satisfaction of higher education students with blackboard learning system during Covid-19

    Purpose- With the advent of the novel COVID-19 disease, the world has become facing an extraordinary situation that has changed the course of normal human life upside down and pushed them towards compulsory, recent technology-based alternative solutions, education being not an exception. Higher education institutions in Turkey rushed from the first moments to avoid the disruption of education process, and transformed into the full-fledged online learning system. Current study addressed aims to investigate how satisfied higher education students are with the transformation to Blackboard Learning System in İstanbul, Turkey during COVID-19. The study compares undergraduate and postgraduate students’ perceptions via thirty items divided into six axes, which are included in a single model. Methodology- An online questionnaire survey sent through BLS itself and WhatsApp was filled out by a total of 294 student respondents, wherein afterwards an inferential and descriptive study with quantitative approach has been employed for analyzing their perceptions. Findings- The results are indicative that the Usefulness, Engagement, Communication and Ease of Use, Self-efficacy, and Challenges axes respectively have a statistically significant effect on students’ perceptions concerning satisfaction with the BLS. As the Usefulness and Engagement axes have the highest contribution to students’ satisfaction with the BLS, the Challenges axis has the least contribution. The findings state that satisfaction of postgraduate students, in terms of Self-efficacy, Communication and Ease of Use and Challenges axes, along with a clear supremacy over the Overall axes level is higher than undergraduate students. Moreover, all demographic dimensions except gender, place of living, the kind of device preferred and the willingness in using BLS in the future, influence students’ perceptions. Conclusion- It can be concluded that the transformation into BLS during COVID-19 has been satisfactory for higher education students, especially for postgraduate students. Some traits and drawbacks of BLS have been inferred along with recommendations which may contribute to successful implementation of BLS.

    Satisfaction of higher education students with online learning during Covid-19

    Purpose- With the advent of COVID-19 the world has faced a situation that has changed the course of education towards technology-based alternative solutions. High education institutions in Turkey rushed from the first moments to avoid the disruption of education process, and transformed into the online learning system. Current study aims to investigate the satisfaction level of high education students in İstanbul Turkey during COVID-19. Methodology- An online survey has been filled out by more than two hundred students. Findings- The results show that most of the variables related with the usage and usefulness of online system have statistically significant effects on students’ perceptions concerning satisfaction. It can be reported that the transformation during COVID-19 is satisfactory for all levels of higher education students. Conclusion- The study also tries to differentiate between the perceptions of undergraduate and postgraduate students and it has been found that post graduates are more satisfied in overall terms. Moreover, most demographic dimensions also have different influences on the undergraduate and postgraduate students’ perceptions. The results of the study lead to recommendations and suggestions related with future implementation of online education system useful for both educators and implementers.

    Rising value of data in contemporary higher education

    Purpose - The purpose of this study is to reflect the importance of effective use of data to predict and improve academic success as an essential criterion for assessing the quality of higher education institutions in the 21st Century. This paper intends to clarify importance of data and its evaluation components, namely Educational Data Mining (EDM), Learning Analytics (LA), Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), as integral part of Fifth Generation Universities (UNIVERSITY 5.0) era in the globalized competitive higher education sector. For this reason, this paper advocates “Rising Value of Data in Contemporary Higher Education” for the university of the new age. Methodology - The study employs a literature review aiming to reflect the new atmosphere and requirements in the higher education system based on selected topics. A comprehensive analysis on the game changer role of data in the higher education institutions was considered. The aim was to identify the difference created by effective use of data in higher education institutions to predict and improve academic success in the competitive academic environment of the new era. Findings - The analysis reveals that higher education institutions should understand the essential role of educational data with the expansion of digital revolution and rapid change in technologies in the 21st Century and design their strategies accordingly. Notably, it is clearly seen that the universities have not only effectively use educational data and its evaluation components namely Educational Data Mining (EDM), Learning Analytics (LA), Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) but also internalize the reality of their rising value to predict and improve academic success as well as creating a significant financial contribution to their development. As a matter of the fact, universities established many projects and effectively used their Learning Analytics (LA) tools. Besides, the emergence of Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) enhanced the efficiency and effectiveness of management operations. Conclusion - Findings may be concluded that universities need to apply the effective use of data particularly in the context of new era like Industry 5.0, Society 5.0 and University 5.0 to obtain academic success, which is considered as an essential criterion for assessing the quality of higher education institutions. Indeed, universities have to follow a data- driven culture as greater demands of universities already appeared for retention, completion and graduation rates of students to improve student success. As a matter of fact, the effective use of Educational Data Mining (EDM) and Learning Analytics (LA) is going on for the last two decades in higher education institutions. Indeed, Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are effective in data management as two impressive game changers for universities changing educational world from the financial perspective. For this reason, it may be argued that the effective use of data and its evaluation components, namely Educational Data Mining (EDM), Learning Analytics (LA), Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are considered as the integral part of Fifth Generation Universities (UNIVERSITY 5.0) era in the globalized competitive higher education sector of 21st Century.

    An innovative approach for higher education

    Purpose- The purpose of this study is to reflect the position of higher education institutions facing to adapt their strategies to the competitive priorities of the digital transformation era. This paper intends to clarify the new needs and demands of the prospective college students and the required response of universities to stay competitive in the new atmosphere. For this reason, this paper advocates “An Innovative Approach for Higher Education” model for the contemporary university of the new age. Methodology-. The study employs a literature review aiming to reflect the new needs and conditions in the higher education system based on selected topics. A comparative analysis of the needs of higher education institutions against the demands of college students and employers of the world of 2020s was considered. The aim was to analyze the required actions of the universities in the competitive environment concerning demands of the prospective college students including non-educational services and examine the potential for a model of An Innovative Approach for Higher Education. Findings-. The analysis reveals that higher education institutions should adapt themselves to the expectations of new student generations and design their strategies accordingly. Notably, it is clearly seen that the universities have not only be digitalized in their conventional noneducational services but also be ready to supply the demands and conditions of the competition in the digital transformation era. As a matter of the fact, over the Covid-19 crisis most universities keep increasing the use of hybrid model in all disciplines in their education system forced by the market demand. Furthermore, new concepts like industry 5.0 and Society 5.0 provide a basis for the University 5.0 model in parallel to the expectations of the new student generations. Under these circumstances, the results reveal that contemporary universities of this age should concentrate on such topics as understanding Generation Z’s perspective on embracing digital technologies, academic excellence, effective digital transformation in non-educational services and supplying employers’ demands to build a model of An Innovative Approach for Higher Education. Conclusion-. Findings may be concluded that students of digital age extend minor interest in conventional non-educational facilities. Indeed, their priorities have changed in parallel to technological advantages of digital transformation era and their value expectation from undergraduate education towards their career. As a matter of fact, the Covid-19 period brought a serious momentum towards a digital transformation of universities. For this reason, it may be argued that there may be no need for usual conventional non-educational components, and related elements for higher education in the near future. Instead, a significant need for a clear perception to meet the expectations of college students and prospected employers reflecting the new conditions of 21st Century is valid. For this reason, universities should rethink and redesign their structures. Indeed, blended learning in traditional universities and inevitable growth of digital higher education institutions named as University 5.0 will be seen after 2030s.

    Yapay zekâ ve yükseköğrenimin dönüşümü

    Bu çalışma, yapay zekâ (YZ) teknolojilerinin yükseköğrenim kurumları üzerindeki etkilerini tarihsel, sosyo-teknolojik ve pedagojik bir perspektifle ele almaktadır. Makalede, endüstriyel toplumun ihtiyaçlarına göre şekillenmiş mevcut üniversite yapısının, üretken YZ teknolojilerinin ortaya çıkardığı yeni dinamikler karşısında yetersiz kaldığı savunulmaktadır. ALM hipotezine atıfla, yalnızca rutin bilişsel işlerin değil, aynı zamanda yaratıcı ve üst-bilişsel görevlerin de YZ sistemleri tarafından ikame edilmeye başlandığı vurgulanmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, üniversitelerin yalnızca öğrencilerini bilgiyle donatmakla kalmayıp; onların yaratıcı, eleştirel düşünebilen ve muhakeme yapabilen bireyler olarak yetişmesini destekleyen yeni bir eğitim paradigmasına ihtiyaç duyduğu ileri sürülmektedir. Çalışmada, üç temel dönüşüm alanı öne çıkarılmaktadır: öğrencilerin üst-bilişsel yetkinliklerini geliştiren tematik ve bağlama dayalı öğrenme modelleri; YZ araçlarının bireyselleştirilmiş öğrenme süreçlerine entegrasyonu; ve üniversitenin bir platform olarak yeniden kurgulanması. Sonuç olarak çalışmada YZ çağında üniversitelerin hem kendi organizasyonel yapıları hem de pedagojik yaklaşımları açısından köklü bir dönüşüm geçirmeleri gerektiği ortaya konmaktadır.
