Yayın Phased subarray imaging for low-cost, wideband coherent array imaging(IEEE, 2003) Johnson, Jeremy A.; Oralkan, Ömer; Ergün, Arif Sanlı; Demirci, Utkan; Karaman, Mustafa; Khuri-Yakub, Butrus ThomasThe front-end hardware complexity of conventional full phased array (FPA) imaging is proportional to the number of array elements. Phased subarray (PSA) imaging has been proposed as a method of reducing the hardware complexity-and therefore system cost and size-while achieving near-FPA image quality. A new method is presented for designing the subarray-dependent interpolation filters suitable for wideband PSA imaging. The method was tested experimentally using pulse-echo data of a wire target phantom acquired using a 3.2-cm. 128-element capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) array with 85% fractional bandwidth at 3 MHz. A specific PSA configuration using seven 32-element subarrays was compared to FPA imaging, representing a 4-fold reduction in front-end hardware complexity and a 43% decrease in frame rate. For targets near the fixed transmit focal distance, the mean 6-dB lateral resolution was identical to that of FPA, the axial resolution improved by 4%, and the SNR decreased by 5 dB. Measurements were repeated for 10 different PSA configurations with subarray sizes ranging from 4 to 60. The lateral and axial resolutions did not vary significantly with subarray size; both the SNR and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) improved with increased subarray size.Yayın Volumetric ultrasound imaging using 2-D CMUT arrays(IEEE-Inst Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2003-11) Oralkan, Ömer; Ergün, Arif Sanlı; Cheng, Ching-Hsiang; Johnson, Jeremy A.; Karaman, Mustafa; H. Lee, Thomas; Khuri-Yakub, Butrus ThomasRecently, capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs) have emerged as a candidate to overcome the difficulties in the realization of 2-D arrays for real-time 3-D imaging. In this paper, we present the first volumetric images obtained using a 2-D CMUT array. We have fabricated a 128 x 128-element 2-D CMUT array with through-wafer via interconnects and a 420-mum element pitch. As an experimental prototype, a 32 x 64-element portion of the 128 X 128-element array was diced and flip-chip bonded onto a glass fanout chip. This chip provides individual leads from a central 16 X 16-element portion of the array to surrounding bondpads. An 8 x 16-element poition of the array was used in the experiments along with a 128-channel data acquisition system. For imaging phantoms, we used a 2.37-mm diameter steel sphere located 10 mm from the array center and two 12-mm-thick Plexiglas plates located 20 mm and 60 mm from the array. A 4 X 4 group of elements in the middle of the 8 X 16-element array was used in transmit, and the remaining elements were used to receive the echo signals. The echo signal obtained from the spherical target presented a frequency spectrum centered at 4.37 MHz with a 100% fractional bandwidth, whereas the frequency spectrum for the echo signal from the parallel plate phantom was centered at 3.44 MHz with a 91% fractional bandwidth. The images were reconstructed by using RF beamforming and synthetic phased array approaches and visualized by surface rendering and multiplanar slicing techniques. The image of the spherical target has been used to approximate the point spread function of the system and is compared with theoretical expectations. This study experimentally demonstrates that 2-D CMUT arrays can be fabricated with high yield using silicon IC-fabrication processes, individual electrical connections can be provided using through-wafer vias, and flip-chip bonding can be used to integrate these dense 2-D arrays with electronic circuits for practical 3-D imaging applications.Yayın A novel computed tomography image compression method based on classified energy and pattern blocks(IEEE, 2013) Gökbay, İnci Zaim; Gezer, Murat; Güz, Ümit; Gürkan, Hakan; Yarman, Bekir Sıddık BinboğaIn this work, a new biomedical image compression method is proposed based on the classified energy and pattern blocks (CEPB). CEPB based compression method is specifically applied on the Computed Tomography (CT) images and the evaluation results are presented. Essentially, the CEPB is uniquely designed and structured codebook which is located on the both the transmitter and receiver part of a communication system in order to implement encoding and decoding processes. The encoding parameters are block scaling coefficient (BSC) and the index numbers of energy (IE) and pattern blocks (IP) determined for each block of the input images based on the CEPB. The evaluation results show that the newly proposed method provides considerable image compression ratios and image quality.Yayın Classification-based macroblock layer rate control for low delay transmission of H.263 video(IS & T - Soc Imaging Science Technology, 2003-07) Bayazıt, UluğPuri and Aravind's method of macroblock bit count estimation for video rate control is based on the classification of the macroblock data into discrete classes and assigning a unique non-linear estimate for each class and quantization parameter pair. This method stands apart from other methods in the literature, since the model of the bit count versus the quantization parameter relation, parameterized by macroblock variance, is a discrete model generated solely from measurements, We extend their technique for low-delay video rate control (tight buffer regulation) in two ways. We propose a strategy of near-uniform quantization parameter assignments to the macroblocks of a frame that can come close to maximizing an objective spatial quality function, such as PSNR, over the entire frame. We also adaptively update the quantization parameter assignments for the yet to be coded macroblocks, after the encoding of each macroblock, to compensate for any errors in the bit count estimation of the encoded macroblock. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed rate control method can more accurately control the number of bits expended for a frame, as well as yield a higher objective spatial quality than the method adopted by TMN8.Yayın Damariçi yanal kesit görüntüleme için farklı prob yapılarının incelenmesi(IEEE, 2009-06-26) Şişman, Alper; Karaman, MustafaBu çalışmada dönen bir şaftın yanal yüzeyine yerleştirilmiş 8 adet içiçe halka elemanlardan oluşan yana bakan görüntüleme için yeni bir kateter yapısı incelenmiştir. The CEPB is constructed using the training images and then located at both the transmitter and receiver sides of the communication system. Then the energy and pattern blocks of input images to be reconstructed are determined by the same way in the construction of the CEPB. This process is also associated with a matching procedure to determine the index numbers of the classified energy and pattern blocks in the CEPB which best represents (matches) the energy and pattern blocks of the input images. Encoding parameters are block scaling coefficient and index numbers of energy and pattern blocks determined for each block of the input images. These parameters are sent from the transmitter part to the receiver part and the classified energy and pattern blocks associated with the index numbers are pulled from the CEPB. Then the input image is reconstructed block by block in the receiver part using a mathematical model that is proposed. Evaluation results show that the method provides considerable image compression ratios and image quality even at low bit rates.Yayın Fast inter-mode decision and selective quarter-pel refinement in H.264 video coding(IEEE, 2008) Ateş, Hasan FehmiIn H.264 video coding standard, there exist several inter - prediction modes that use macroblock partitions with variable block sizes. Choosing a rate-distortion optimal coding mode for each macroblock is essential for the best possible coding performance, but also prohibitive due to the heavy computational complexity associated with the required rate-distortion calculations. Likewise, sub-pel motion refinement improves the coding efficiency, but becomes a major computational bottleneck when integer-pel search is executed fast. In this paper, we present a simple strategy to reduce the complexity of quarter-pel refinement and inter-mode decision with minimum loss of coding efficiency. Based on the results of the half-pel motion estimation step, our method evaluates the likelihood of each inter-coding mode being optimal. Then, quarter-pel refinement and actual rate and distortion are computed for only those coding modes with sufficient chance of being optimal. We claim that this method minimizes optimal mode estimation error at a given level of refinement and mode decision complexity. Simulation results show that the algorithm speeds up quarter-pel search and inter-mode selection modules by a factor of about 6 with less than 0.12 dB PSNR loss.Yayın Subarray delta-sigma beamforming for ultrasonic imaging(IEEE, 2002) Bilge, Hasan Şakir; Karaman, MustafaWe present a beamforming architecture based on subarray processing with non-uniform oversampling 1-bit delta-sigma (??) modulation. The subarray processing combines conventional phased array and synthetic aperture approaches to form a large aperture using small subarrays thus reduces active channel count. ??-based beamforming improves the efficiency of front-end processing further: oversampling permits precise delaying and single bit data processing simplifies beamforming operation. To reduce the number of firings we use a low beam density associated with the subarray size, and then increase the beam density by lateral interpolation prior to coherent beam summation. Our experimental test results show that the proposed scheme provides high-resolution beamforming while simplifying the front-end.Yayın Coherent array imaging using phased subarrays. Part II: Simulations and experimental results(IEEE-INST Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2005-01) Johnson, Jeremy A.; Oralkan, Ömer; Ergün, Arif Sanlı; Demirci, Utkan; Karaman, Mustafa; Khuri-Yakub, Butrus ThomasThe basic principles and theory of phased subarray (PSA) imaging imaging provides the flexibility of reducing I he number of front-end hardware channels between that of classical synthetic aperture (CSA) imaging-which uses only one element per firing event-and full-phased array (FPA,) imaging-which uses all elements for each firing. The performance of PSA generally ranges between that obtained by CSA and FPA using the same array, and depends on the amount of hardware complexity reduction. For the work described in this paper, we performed FPA, CSA, and PSA imaging of a resolution phantom using both simulated and experimental data from a 3-MHz, 3.2-cm, 128-element capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducer (CMUT) array. The simulated system point responses in the spatial and frequency domains are presented as a means of studying the effects of signal bandwidth, reconstruction filter size, and subsampling rate on the PSA system performance. The PSA and FPA sector-scanned images were reconstructed using the wideband experimental data with 80% fractional bandwidth, with seven 32-element subarrays used for PSA imaging. The measurements on the experimental sector images indicate that, at the transmit focal zone, the PSA method provides a 10% improvement in the 6-dB lateral resolution, and the axial point resolution of PSA imaging is identical to that of FPA imaging. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of PSA image was 58.3 dB, 4.9 dB below that of the FPA image, and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) is reduced by 10%. The simulated and experimental test results presented in this paper validate theoretical expectations and illustrate the flexibility of PSA imaging as a way to exchange SNR and frame rate for simplified front-end hardware.
