The dynamic relationship between technological change and employment: a comparison of youth and total employment using panel VAR approach and causality analysis
    (Sosyoekonomi Derneği, 2022-10) Görkey, Selda
This study empirically examines the relationship and causality between technological change and employment by comparing youth and total employment. It covers data from 16 OECD economies from 1985 to 2018 and uses multifactor productivity (MFP) as a proxy for technological change. The findings from the general method of moments panel vector autoregression (GMM Panel-VAR) approach indicate significant and positive effects of MFP on youth and total employment, and a significant yet negative impact of youth employment on MFP. According to Panel-VAR-Granger- Causality analysis results, there is a two-way causality between MFP and youth employment and a one-way causality from MFP to total employment. Thus, this study empirically confirms the jobcreation effect of technology and finds out that the technological change and employment nexus differs for youth employment compared to that for total employment.

Unemployment and homeownership in Turkey: a preliminary analysis
(Işık Üniversitesi Yayınları, 2023-04-10) Susanlı, Zehra Bilgen
Using individual-level data, this paper aims to explore the link between homeownership and unemployment in Turkey. The Oswald hypothesis states that high homeownership is detrimental to labor market outcomes by restricting the geographical mobility of job searchers. Micro-evidence, however, indicates that homeowners have relatively favorable labor market outcomes. In contrast with the existing micro literature, the findings of this study are in favor of the Oswald hypothesis for the positive link between homeownership and unemployment probability.

Life satisfaction and unemployment in Turkey: evidence from Life Satisfaction Surveys 2004–2013
(Springer Netherlands, 2018-01-01) Susanlı, Zehra Bilgen
This paper has three purposes. First, it explores the relationship between unemployment and well-being in Turkey using data from Life Satisfaction Surveys for the period between 2004 and 2013. Second, it examines to what extent joblessness at the household level interacts with own unemployment. Third, it tests whether the negative effect of unemployment on well-being varies with individuals’ own perceptions of their labor market prospects. Consistent with the other studies in the literature, findings indicate that the unemployed experience significantly lower levels of life satisfaction than the employed. While the results do not provide support for the social norm effect at the household level, they do indicate that that the impact of labor market status on well-being varies with the job prospects. There is also suggestive evidence that women and men are similarly affected by unemployment and job prospects.

A Network representation of households by health exclusion, poverty, and unemployment
(Elsevier Science BV, 2011) Rende, Sevinç; Rende, Deniz; Baysal, Nihat
Social exclusion, emphasized in the European Social Agenda, presents an interesting case study on the discussion of universal vs. means-tested social policies. To understand the conditions under which universal policies may have an advantage over means-tested policies, we propose a method of network representation in which partitions are detected by background characteristics of the households. Using non-relational household level data from three countries, we map the association between exclusion from health care, unemployment and poverty. Our results show that households are less likely to form homogeneous partitioning by poverty and health care exclusion profiles, compared to the partitioning formed by poverty and unemployment characteristics. The results suggest that in cases where identifying beneficiaries is difficult, illustrated by heterogeneous partitioning, universal coverage offers an advantage over means-tested social policies.

Impact of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on daily routines and air environment: evidence from Turkey
(Springer, 2021-03) Ali, Hussain; Yılmaz, Gözde; Fareed, Zeeshan; Shahzad, Farrukh; Ahmad, Munir
Turkish people are facing several problems because of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), as the pandemic has brought about drastic changes to their daily routines. This study mainly investigates the impact of this pandemic on the daily routines of Turkish. It also unveils how COVID-19 affects the air environment. The adopted methods for data collection are based on open-ended questions and Facebook interviews as per recommended by QSR-International (2012). The sample of this study comprises of Turkish students as well as professional workers. The findings of the research show that there are eighteen different results of COVID-19 that have been identified according to the Turkish people’s daily routines. Results reveal that increasing unemployment, decrease in air contamination, high stress and depression, a slowdown in the economic growth, and the tourism industry are profoundly affected due to the COVID-19 in Turkey. Furthermore, on the one hand, the consequences of the pandemic are segregated into social problems and psychological issues in daily routines. On the other hand, they have shown a positive impact on the air environment. This study concludes that, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the lives of the people in Turkey are subject to deterioration, while the air environment of Turkey is gradually improving.

Importance and development of foreign direct investment: an analysis for Turkey
(International Journal of Economics, Commerce and Management, 2021-04) Kılıç, Fatih; Teker, Dilek
After 1980, with the increased globalization race investments in Turkey increased significantly with the lifting of barriers to capital flows. With the Economic Stability Decisions of January 24, 1980, Turkey entered this race and entered into full financial release with Decree No. 32 issued in 1989. In this study, the relationship between inflation, unemployment and industrial production, which is one of the economic indicators of foreign direct investments in Turkey, was analyzed with the VAR model. Johansen cointegration test, Impulse - Response analysis and Variance Decomposition analysis were conducted to evaluate the relationship between variables. The outcomes highlight that inflation, unemployment and industrial production have a crucial impact on foreign investments for Turkey.
