Reflections on the International Noise Awareness Day 2023 activities
(Society of Acoustics, 2024) Şaher, Konca; Dümen, Ayça Şentop; Sezgin, Hakika; Nas, Sezin; Kelle, Dilara; Demiral, Yücel
This paper presents an overview of the experiences and outcomes derived from the activities organized for International Noise Awareness Day 2023 in Turkey with the theme “Keep your hearing, keep your health”. Collaboratively organized by Turkish Acoustical Society, and Occupational Hygienists Society, the initiatives aimed to explore the role of sound in educational facilities, with a particular focus on the perspectives of students and teachers. These activities were a student drawing competition, an online International Symposium, a research project titled "Assessment of Acoustic Conditions in Schools and Health Effects on School," and an "Acoustics Workshop in Educational Buildings" conducted at the Izmir BLX Acoustics Laboratory. Drawing from our experiences and findings, we highlight the significance of actively involving researchers, acoustic consultants, occupational hygienists, teachers, students, and designers in such endeavours. Our findings indicate that inclusive approaches not only boost public engagement but also enhance awareness of behavioural, emotional, educational, administrative and design aspects related to sound. By promoting collaboration and participation in knowledge exchange, such activities significantly improve understanding of sound-related issues in schools.

Istanbul at the threshold of nation state: allied occupation, national resistance, and political conflict, 1918-1923
(Berghahn Books, 2024) Ülker, Erol
During the formation of the Turkish national movement, while Istanbul was under British, French, and Italian occupation, a distinct factional split emerged. One side supported the Ottoman sultanate’s sovereignty, while the other championed a populist, republican path. An Istanbul at the Threshold of Nation State contextualizes this history of coalition, political disintegration, and power struggles in Turkey between 1918 and 1923 to highlight the rise of anti-communist movements and the emergence of national labor and merchant confederations that formed xenophobic, Christian exclusionary policies in the 1920s and 30s.

Evaluation of thermal insulation and air permeability of needle-punched nonwovens recycled from waste pantyhose
(Trans Tech Publications Ltd, 2024) Sezgin, Hande; Yalçın Eniş, İpek; Maral, Hıdır
Waste amount in the textile industry is rising in tandem with rising production and consumption levels. Reusing waste is always the best option, but for some textile products, this isn't the case. A ruptured pair of pantyhose is among the one of the best examples. Due to their delicate structure, these products are easily punctured, so they are disposed of in solid waste sites after 2-3 times use. In this study, it is aimed to recycle these pantyhose waste (polyamide/elastane), and use it in the production of thermal panels, and to statistically examine the effects of varying thickness and elastane content on the thermal insulation and air permeability of this material. In order to create nonwoven structures with varying thicknesses and elastane ratios, the pantyhose wastes converted into fiber form and then into carded web by using a carding machine. Then, a needle punching technology is used for the web formation process. The Minitab software program is used to analyze changes in air permeability and thermal conductivity coefficient between the samples using a full factorial experimental design. The findings indicate that while both factors affected air permeability, only the changing thickness had a statistically significant impact on the thermal conductivity coefficient.

Quality or quantity? the role of human capital on sustainable growth
(IGI Global, 2024-10-03) İnanç, Özlem
This study examines the link between human capital and sustainable economic growth, highlighting the contradiction of rising university education without improved graduate employability in Turkiye from 2014 to 2023. It notes high unemployment among university graduates, indicating a disconnect between the skills provided by educational institutions and job market demands. The rapid growth in universities and graduates has not matched the increase in high-skilled job opportunities, leading to skill mismatches and underemployment, especially during economic downturns. The paper calls for a reassessment of educational strategies towards a quality-focused education that prioritizes practical skills and market needs, emphasizing university-industry collaborations to boost graduate employability and ensure higher education's role in fostering economic resilience and growth.

Innovation diffusion and technology acceptance theory
(CRC Press, 2024-01-01) Akaiso, Emmanuel
Innovation can be defined as the transformation of ideas, goals, visions, and dreams of invention into valuable goods and services for people to exchange for an amount of money. Something everyone on earth must experience is changing, and many people are too afraid to experience this. As a result, they never move ahead in life because they have allowed themselves to be captives of fear, allowing themselves to be unable to alter their circumstances. After the difficult experience of the past twenty-four months due to COVID-19, the eyes of everyone have been opened to how important change, adaptability, and flexibility are. Looking back, we can see that change is particularly important for everyone. That is exactly where innovation comes in (Stenberg 2016). To paraphrase Steve Jobs, innovation differentiates a leader from a follower.
