Anish Kapoor’un Leviathan adlı eserinde yücelik, bellek ve aşkınlık kavramları üzerine

Abstract

Günümüzde sınırsız temalar ve malzemelerle geleneksel kültürden uzaklaşan heykel sanatı, farklı duygulanımlara sebep olup izleyenin katılımını gerektiren bir sürece girmiştir. Üç boyutlu sanat anlayışının da ötesinde, tarihsel ve kültürel olmak üzere büyük tapınak, büyük yapıt gibi anlamlar yüklenen heykel, her dönemde toplumsal süreçlerden ve politik iktidarlardan etkilenmiştir. Bu anlayışla benzer bir ifade sergileyen çağdaş heykel sanatçısı Anish Kapoor’un eserleri, yakından incelendiğinde, bir kısım işlerinin modern sanatın bilindik sınırlarını zorladığı söylenebilir. Kapoor’un eserleri ilk bakışta izleyiciler tarafından anlaşılabilir ve değerlendirilebilir gibi görülse de, gerek çok katmanlı sembolizmi, gerekse kavramsal ve felsefi çerçevesi açılarından ele alındığında çağdaşlarından ayrılmaktadır. Sanatçı, eserlerinde genel geçer bilimsel teorileri, mistik ve doğaüstü bir açıdan sorgulamaktadır. Kapoor’un eserleri; sonsuzluk, nitelik, güzellik, varlık-yokluk ve bilimselliği tartışmaya açar ve aynı zamanda bazı kavramların özüne inerek onların ne anlama geldiğini irdeler. Çalışma, Anish Kapoor’un bu özelliklerini değerlendirmek için sanatçının 2011’de Paris Grand Palais’de sergilediği Leviathan adlı eserinin derinlemesine bir biçimde incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu araştırma da, öncelikli olarak izleyicide yarattığı fiziksel etkileşimin yanı sıra kültürel, felsefi ve politik yönleriyle eser değerlendirilmiştir. Thomas Hobbes’un siyaset felsefesinin ana hatlarının ele alındığı Leviathan adlı yapıtın, Kapoor’un aynı isimli eseri üzerindeki etkisi çalışmada ortaya konmuştur. Romantik akım ile birlikte gelişen, Alman İdealist felsefesinin ve Kant’ın temel problematiklerinden olan aşkınlık-yücelik (süblim) gibi kavramların sorgulanması, eserin değerlendirilmesine katkı sağlamıştır. Ayrıca Jean François Lyotard’ın postmodermizm ile ilgili fikirleri ile kurulan anlatılar, Leviathan adlı eserin çağdaş sanattaki önemini kavrama ve Kapoor’un eserlerini derinlemesine anlamlandırma fırsatını ortaya çıkarmıştır.

In a closer look at some of the works of Anish Kapoor, one of the most prominent artists in comtemporary sculpture, we can observe him pushing the limits of modern art. At first glance, Kapoor’s work appears to be accessible and assessable, but in actuality, it represents multi-layered symbolism, traditional conceptualism and philosophy; seperating him from his comtemporaries. The artist questions general scientific theories in a mystic and transcendental way. His works examine the concepts of eternity, quality, beauty, existence/absence and science and the meanings of certain concepts by analyzing them in depth. One can witness his merit in contemporary art and interpret his sense of aesthetics by a thorough examination of the exhibition in Monumenta titled Leviathan, which occupies an area of 72.00 m3 Grand Palais´nave. Based on this examination, opportunity represents itself to elaborate and express the importance of his work in contemporary art. This study will start from the Romantic Era, which refers to the Late-Enlightenment Period and the analysis of the book Leviathan, published in 1851 by Thomas Hobbes and deemed to be the main inspiration source of his artwork. Leviathan will be analyzed by positioning it according to its effects on the audience and the philosophical background of the work will be discussed. The questioning of transcendencesovereignty will be important in the analysis of the work. The footprints of Romanticism can best be seen in literature and philosophy. The main theme in German Idealism and in the problematic of sublime which Kant inaugurated. Thoughts of the poet Friedrich Schiller about the sublime have also inspired this work. In summary; in this study, within the boundaries defining Hobbe’s political philosophy, the position of the concept of sovereignty within romantic, modern and post-modern art will be evaluated in regard of the terminology utilized by philosophers such as Immanuel Kant and Jean François Lyotard and thus put forth the aspects where Kapoor’s work is unconventional.
