CSR practices in Turkey: Examining CSR reports
(Greenleaf Publishing, 2015-07) Uyan Atay, Bilge; Tuncay Çelikel, Aslı
This study examines the private companies that publish CSR reports in Turkey. Turkey has a growing economy, located in an international arena with an increasing number of global brands starting to export their products from Turkey with even more multinational enterprises (MNEs) planning to locate in the country. Now, some Turkish companies and subsidiaries of MNEs have started to publish CSR reports. Our findings show that strong Turkish conglomerates are playing a constructive role in macro-level development and governance in Turkey. They are also addressing local problems such as education, human rights, environmental protection and workers' rights. Besides, subsidiaries of MNEs are also having an impact with respect to the application of their headquarters' community programs in Turkish society.

Just a progressive step: women’s empowerment in Turkish microcredit practices
(Universidad de Granada, 2019-12-15) Soykut Sarıca, Yeşim Pınar; Çağlı Kaynak, Elif; Bal, Esra
In developing countries, the economic potential of women has long been under-utilized as a means of lifting households and communities out of poverty. In this respect, microcredit schemes offer an innovative form of social welfare, widely accessible to women. This study examines one such program from the Turkish context: the Maya Enterprise for Micro Finance, a conditional credit opportunity for women to start and/or develop their own businesses, granted by the Foundation for the Support of Women's Work (KEDV). Our study aimed to explore the impact of KEDV's credit transfer scheme on the lives of users, especially in terms of the psychological and economic empowerment of women. Deploying a mixed methods research strategy, we administered and analyzed quantitative surveys (n=336) in order to determine the perceptions, thoughts, insights and reactions of KEDV program users, also conducting qualitative interviews with 21 participants. Our findings indicate that the program was influential in empowering women by increasing their self-confidence and changing their relationship with other people in the household.

An economic analysis of the communication skills in globalised industrial relations: social dialogue and the negotiation process in Turkey
(Univ Complutense Madrid, 2011-03-01) Soykut Sarıca, Yeşim Pınar; Şen Taşbaşı, Aslı
The purpose of this paper is to provide an economic analysis of the social dialogue experience in Turkey with an emphasis on the role of communication in industrial relations. We ascertain social dialogue -and the related negotiation process- as a major communication form in industrial relations and attempt to find out whether it serves well to promote consensus building and democratic involvement among the main stakeholders in employment. We particularly question the success of the existing social dialogue structures and processes in Turkey in resolving economic and social issues through communication, advancing social and industrial peace, improving competitiveness through increased productivity and complying international commitments in employment.

Women's empowerment and welfare traformation in the context of microcredit in Turkey
(Pressacademia, 2015-06-04) Soykut Sarıca, Yeşim Pınar; Çağlı Kaynak, Elif
Gender inequalities are of the main problems in almost every society. Like all other parts of the system, economic and business environment haven't attempted sufficiently in struggling with this issue. When these inequalities combined with development problems the growth of poverty among women and their exclusion from society multiplies. Although there is so much struggle for constructing equal society women are still considered as ignorant part of the society and hence, vulnerable beings, who have to be protected and taken care of. In this sense women have not much chance for being "independent individual" both in social and economic terms. However these constraints upon women's vulnerability and inability are tried to be changed by Microfinance system to move from the perspective of women's empowerment. In this paper, we try to analyze whether the performance of practices by the non-governmental organizations ability to achieve objective to improve the living conditions and interest of the women in the society or not by comparing to micro credit organizations in Turkey. We also try to answer whether women's participation in employment contributes to well-being their lives and contributes their role in working life.

Dilemma of the HR manager: An optimization for training and development budgets using integer programming a case study from an international firm
(Int Inst Informatics & Systemics, 2005) Yanık, Serhat; Yazıcı, Selim; Şenel, İlhan Kerem
This paper is about a dilemma of an HR manager of an international company. The major problem of HR managers is to minimize their training and development budgets. Making a training budget is not so complex; but the important, yet often neglected, part of budgeting is the costs of absence of employees. In every kind of training, whether traditional or e-learning, there is a cost for the time being spent away from work. Some of the managers think that this is an idle time for company, plus the employee is paid during this period. This paper focuses on the costs of the absence and their effect on training budgets. Some scenarios were developed with the help of an HR manager of an international firm. The feasibility of these scenarios was studied by using integer programming.

(IEEE, 2013-03-18) Karayaz, Gamze; Güngör, Özge

Global business environment resulted with increased importance of project management methodologies, aligned with competitive strategies. Today, many organizations have recognized the importance of implementing PMO's for effective project control and better stakeholder (executives) support for projects. PMOs also undertake strategic roles such as incorporating higher management support to achieve strategic goals, integrating business strategies into project management efforts, and prioritization of projects. This paper examines PMOs in the process of strategic alignment. Moreover, the contribution of PMOs to achieve strategic goals is explored. Our initial findings are promising represented in a framework, and demonstrated by a case study application review using IT and telecommunication companies selected from Turkey. The research offers future directions and implications of a well-established successful PMO system.

Visiting the iron cage: Bureaucracy and the contemporary workplace
    (Springer, 2014-03-06) Yüksel, Ahmet Hakan
Bureaucracy as an organizational form has always been a controversial issue and placed at the very heart of most discussions within organizational theory. One side of this prolonged discussion praises this administrative form as the ‘rational’ way to run an organization. It provides needed guidance and clarifies responsibilities, which enables employees to become more efficient. However, the opposition claims that in a non-linear world, where industrial organizations are forced to confront the challenging task of sensing and responding to unpredictable, novel situations of highly competitive markets, such an organizational form stifles creativity, fosters de-motivation and causes pressure on employees. Dealing with a bureaucratic form of organization and its consequences begs for a context. It would be appropriate to quit ‘taking sides’ and develop a sound analysis of this phenomenon under the conditions of today’s global workplace environment. This chapter intends to delineate the conditions under which bureaucracy has emerged and the way it has been interpreted since its inception and develop a sound and appropriate analytical approach to its functioning given the prevailing conditions of the contemporary workplace.
